After a refreshing shower, it is time to do a bit of exploring. But we have a huge problem. Our driver, who could communicate in a smattering of English, is long gone and we have just realized Kiswahili is as alien as Klingon. But we are determined to make it work....

Our hotel is located at 3 Av. Kitona in the Gombe business district. After recovering from the shock of our hotel room charges, we are ushered into the air-conditioned rooms full of creature comforts way beyond our backpacker budget.

It’s midday as we descend towards Kinshasa International Airport. The day is Saturday, October 25, 2025. Holding a handwritten notice with the name of our organization and the hotel we are headed to; we quickly spot our driver Havré....
