The African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) today officially launched the ASLM 2026 Ambassador Challenge, bringing together laboratory professionals, researchers, students, public health advocates, innovators, and partners from across Africa to become champions for integrated diagnostics and health security ahead of the ASLM 2026 Biennial Conference, taking place 08–11 December 2026 in Cape Town, South Africa. Opening the program, Dr. Talkmore Maruta, ASLM Director of Programs, welcomed participants and underscored the importance of the Ambassador Challenge as more than a conference campaign, but a movement of trusted voices, describing it as a continental movement to amplify science, advocate for diagnostics , and act for a healthy Africa empowering ambassadors to elevate African voices, showcase laboratory excellence, and demonstrate how diagnostics strengthen resilient health systems and protect communities across the continent. The workshop brings together Regional Subject Matter Experts, Technical Working Group Chairpersons, Examination and Certification Committee members, Regional Centres of Excellence, and representatives from African Union Member States to review and strengthen the RTCP-BBP curriculum, ensuring it reflects emerging biological threats and equips Africa's biosafety and biosecurity workforce with the competencies needed to safeguard public health.
