“And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.” John 21:25 KJV bible.com/bible/1/jhn.21…

Anyone else dislike the term “holy day of obligation” It feels legalistic. Encourages the bare minimum.

Your time isn't that precious. You don't need to rush around everywhere, trying to be busy every second of the day. No need to have an aneurysm because someone made you slow down while driving, or because they were slow to use a cash point. Chill out a bit, you'll live longer.

I pray that we remain the established church - it is, I believe, central to both our identity and our calling. It is also a very important part of the fabric of English life - and the parish system, whilst needing much intensive care right now, is a gift we should treasure.

@mrdavidrowe I don’t have a source, nor time to look it up right now, but from memory I think the word “leopard” used to mean what we now call a lion, and I think lion as a metaphor for God works especially in juxtaposition with shepherd. So, there’s that (unless I’ve made it up)

One frustrating thing about making rhyming paraphrases of the Psalms is that there is only one good rhyme for 'shepherd' – and there aren't many opportunities to compare God with a leopard.

@Steeplekeeper @churchofengland Surely the problem in that scenario is in the way people are selected to be on the CNC, rather than the way they vote once they get there. If people are motivated to trick their colleagues in that way, they ought not to be choosing our bishops.

A lay synod rep tells me that with the secret ballot they can speak positively about an egalitarian/inclusive candidate, then secretly vote against & nobody knows they blocked it. So secret voting facilitates underhand behaviour. And this is the @churchofengland #NolanPrinciples

@Steeplekeeper @synod Hang on, I’m out of the loop (as a non-member, it is extremely difficult to figure out what is going on at Synod without watching the whole thing - another pressing transparency issue); is the argument that it shouldn’t be a secret ballot?

Cathy Rhodes, expressing lay people’s incredulity at the idea of continuing the secret CNC voting for the appointment of bishops. Then @synod votes to continue with the secrecy. Another fail. Lots of talk about transparency & accountability, but #synod keeps voting against it.

@scumberk The language of the Church of England isn’t meant to be English per se; it’s meant to be “such a tongue as the people understandeth” (Art.XXIV). This is extremely basic stuff — who is on Synod yet doesn’t know about the Articles of Religion?

Today we’ve had the idea queer folk don’t meet the ‘gold standard of the Gospel’ and the colonialist idea that those needing an interpreter shouldn’t be part of choosing bishops as English is the language of the church. So I guess us queer, brown folk know our place. #synod

Antipopes should always have the opposite name to the reigning pope at the time; so Urban/Rural Clement/Inclement Paul/Peter Innocent/Guilty Pius/Impius Benedict/Maledict Francis/Dominic ... and so on

@stefanroberts It’s actually a non-issue and a misrepresentation; wafers which already meet Coeliac UK’s definition of “gluten free” are already completely legal within the Church of England

@EdBiblical @liambeadle I think your final point people forget now everyone has microphones but beyond the practicality, as a liturgical use of space it signifies a change in gear and a different mode of address and I think it keeps people awake to have you standing in various places for different bits

@stpaulswesthack The media is being really irresponsible with this story; it’s entirely standard for the public to be allowed to nominate people, but from the headlines you’d think it was going to a popular vote
