It took me 10 years of philosophy, politics, work, and study to decide; Good Farming is the only thing that will save us.

You and 100 other people are faced with a blue button and a yellow button. If at least 51 people pick blue, then all & only those who picked yellow die. If at least 51 people pick yellow, then all & only those who picked blue live. What is your choice?

@GoodFarmingAdam @MatMvB @gfodor Well first you have india which obviously around 90%+ red. then you have the entire continent of africa. Then you have the arabs who dont even let their woman make most choices for themselves so they arent gonna let others make a choice for them. More to so blues just unwinnable.

“I would vote blue to save people who voted blue because they don’t understand the question but those who voted red because they don’t understand the question are horrible people” Put it in the louvre, this is pure crystal-distilled tribalism
PoliticalAndy@AndyPolitical

@gfodor it was, you're just a horrible person that didn't pay attention to the question and would've killed a bunch of children

You leave your wife and kids at home to go for a walk. Suddenly, a lunatic runs up and points a gun at your temple. “You must choose red or blue!” he screams. “If you choose red, i’ll let you go, nothing happens. If you choose blue, i’m going to add up all the choices of the last 10 people i pulled this stunt on and if less than 50% of them chose blue, i shoot you.” What do you choose, assuming you want to go home to your wife and kids?
doomer@uncledoomer

the fundamental disconnect here is, if you have nothing to live for, press blue. if you have something to live for, someone who relies on you, children, aging parents, even a dog, pressing the blue button risks killing you, and so is a risk to them. you must press the red button.

This isn't an exercise in logic or ethics or game theory or anything like that, it's an exercise in *semiotics*. Something about this *framing* of the problem, in English, on Twitter, messes with your head and makes you pattern-match to problems where blue is the better answer.
Tim Urban@waitbutwhy

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

@GoodFarmingAdam @FogfieldProject Really the question is. Is your guaranteed safety worth the potential of some people dying. Interesting is how changing it from pressing a button to something like stepping into a woodchipper or taking poison is only a semantic difference but has radically different polls

@GoodFarmingAdam @woarna_is_right Well I’d actually only need to save one to get to the 2 votes since I’ve already saved myself and since the same person can be saved by multiple people (at different times) I’d argue red is the better long term play in terms of saving lives. Can’t save anyone if you’re dead

My sense is that to rationally pick blue you have to: a.) Miscalculate the probability of picking blue being pivotal b.) Be suicidal c.) Be Jesus And I'd guess there aren't that many Jesuses or suicidal people walking amongst us so…
woarna@woarna_is_right

@basedball_ Some will press blue. I just don't think it's worth risking my life to to save them unless: 1. I believe there's a good chance my blue button press puts the blue votes past the 50% threshold or, 2. I massively value other peoples lives over my own. I don't believe either.

@JoeGotBlown @woarna_is_right If its near 50/50 then 3.5 billion people die. There wouldnt even be that many people left to help. The statistical case here is just that even in the less likely scenarios, blue votes are still worth more relative life value than each red vote.

@ThinkWiselyMatt Its because they know that the anti-social choice is the immoral choice, so they have to convince themselves that you are also anti-social and immoral. Its like a stress disorder.

I love how one of the red pill counter arguements is just "No actually you wouldnt press blue you liar" It's like they lack complete awareness of other minds
jesse@froststar14

@ThinkWiselyMatt only on internet polls are most of these so called blue button pushers able to make the claim, if tomm this was all real most of you would quietly press the red button, so all this grand standing and guilt tripping is a sham and immoral to boot

Game theory only suggests click red if this is the only game you'll play ever and the only goal is to survive. Im sorry you actually exist in society, and game theory routinely shows that pro-social behaviour leads to the greatest outcomes for the most people for most of the time. We are both moral and correct because to be moral is the correct choice. Nothing happens in a vacuum and you logic is severely reductionist. Jesus Christ was the greatest game theorist who ever lived and that is why he is the king of kings.

Game theory vs EV. Game theory suggests: click red because it's the only option guaranteed for your survival. If you're wrong and blue wins, you're fine. If you're right, then you survive. All blue choosers die. But, pure prisoners dilemma isn't the only way to estimate what to do in critical situations. There's also EV or Expected Value. Depending on you moral/ethical/utility values you will just automatically pick the highest EV option. In this case, the highest EV option is "everyone lives" because the net loss of choosing red is demented. I would use a stronger word there. But you catch my drift.

The original question specified "everyone in the world." There's a critical mass of young children/babies who would not, under any circumstances, be able to understand the question, and would pick randomly. Voting blue is the only way to save them.
just matt@questionableway

last thing i’ll say about the button is that it’s pretty strange how few red voters change their position upon learning there is a substantial contingent of blue voters

No, because in the non-button versions red always wins! That’s what blue team doesn’t understand— the entire blue victory is contingent on *the specific detail of it being a button* Make it a woodchipper or a nuke or a drowning tank or any actually lethal object and red wins by a landslide! Which suggests most blue voters are full of shit and lying about their beliefs!
peepeepoopoo@DeepDishEnjoyer

here's the last thing i'll say about the red/blue button debate. we now know that when polling ended, blue ended up winning. knowing this, isn't one going around trying to convince people to vote red unethical? absent of this proselytizing, people believe in a high trust society

Its quite simple really. Me and 50% of people are going to vote blue to protect everybody. You and 50% of people are going to vote Red to protect yourselves and kill everyone else. I am with the martyrs, like chirst, having faith in protecting the general good. And you are in the death cult, who want to kill the non-believers. Its really cut and dry here.

@GoodFarmingAdam @lymanstoneky Joining a suicide pact is only a risk because of other people who don't want to join your suicide pact... Interesting. My very nature improves the quality of life of people around me actually. I have a lot of testamonials. You should instead tell me who hurt you.
