PhD student Steven Pretty has combined subject-specific impact inputs (measured from falls in the lab) with subject-specific beam models of the femur (from DXA) to generate (you guessed it) subject-specific estimates of femoral neck stresses. Check it out!

Impact simulations of falls from standing height investigated impact dynamics and fx risk. Lateral and posterior-lateral impacts were most dangerous, and hip protectors most effective for lateral and oblique impacts. @IBAL_Lab, @FergusonLabETH, @IFleps

Did you know we use force plates in multiple labs at #UWaterlooCCCARE? Force plates are used to measure ground reaction forces and can be paired with biophysical measurements, motion capture, virtual reality and perturbations in clinical research! #KinCCCAREs

This week for #KinCCCAREs, we’re highlighting the biomechanics lab. Labs like KIN 121 use equipment such as force plates and force transducers to help students learn about the mechanics of movement in the human body and how muscles and tissues work together to produce movement.

Congrats to our grad team for leading a J Applied Biomech @Human_Kinetics paper which used ultrasound to characterize soft tissue thickness overlying the greater trochanter, and modeled their influence on fall-related impact loads and hip fracture risk. doi.org/10.1123/jab.20….
