It's not just tech. Anything new the government doesn't understand, it first crushes, then it regulates. Same thing has happened with the arts. GoK detained, exiled and frustrated artists, called the arts useless to the market, then when social media gave artists an outlet GoK couldn't control, GoK started talking of creative economy and arts as a CBC pathway.

The only thing I hate about AI written work submitted by students is that I have to read and grade it. It's usually terrible and often misses the point.
But other than that, I don't get too bothered about it because the cynicism was always there. It didn't start with AI. It started with the colonial ideology that we should learn for employers, and then it was reinforced by the neoliberal ideology that we should learn for the market. Never for ourselves. So I figure that it's difficult for young people to learn differently from how the government, their parents and the media keep brainwashing them to.
I do try to convince the students to value doing the work themselves, but I have no illusions. In the evening after my class, they'll go to NTV or Citizen social media pages and a flashy-looking anchor will be telling them not to bother with education. My voice doesn't stand a chance.

It always amazes me that imperialism cares what we think, yet it acts despite what we think.
And the other dissonance is that despite this investment in narratives, the Kenyan education system has a lot of fools who fool claim that studying narratives is not "practical" and has no "relevance to the market."

If we don't educate children in history, culture, languages, religion, traditions, ethics and critical thinking preferring instead to limit them to STEM subjects, then we are raising a generation of easy to manipulate morons. This is becoming ever more obvious today.
