Old Music Friday: Madonna Material Girl… The song came out in 1984 on the ‘Like a Virgin’ album, but Madonna didn’t actually write it. It was written by Peter Brown and Robert Rans. Still, she made it hers in a way that only she can. That voice, that attitude, that knowing look like she’s in on a joke you’re still catching up to. The music video is one of the most iconic ever. It’s basically a recreation of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, with Madonna channeling Marilyn Monroe performing ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’. The pink dress, the diamonds, the whole thing… instantly legendary. But here’s the twist. In the video, while she’s playing this over-the-top “material girl” on set, in real life she falls for the guy who doesn’t shower her with gifts. So even the video is kind of saying… maybe it’s not about the money at all. Madonna herself has said she later regretted the song a bit, because people took it too literally and it followed her around forever. Which is funny, because she’s one of the smartest artists to ever play the pop game. Nothing about what she does is accidental. Also, small world moment… the guy who first signed Madonna, Seymour Stein, also ended up discovering us. Which is either a sign we’re destined for greatness… or that he’s got very broad taste. At the time, Madonna was broke, hustling in New York, trying to make anything stick. Within a couple of years, she became the biggest pop star on the planet. Not because she had the best voice in the room, but because she knew exactly who she was, or at least who she wanted you to think she was. Anyway, here’s our version. Hope we didn’t ruin it…
