Carved out of Khondalite stone, this imposing sculpture depicts the scene of Buddha descending from Tryastrimsa Heaven to earth at the place known as Sankissa (present day Farrukhabad, UP), one of the four miracles in his life. Buddha stands on a pedestal with four rosettes, wearing a fine antarvasa and uttarasanga, in samapada sthanak posture. His right hand shows abhayamudra, while his left holds the folds of his uttarasanga. The figure is flanked by a bejeweled companion holding a parasol over Buddha’s head and other figure on the other side holding an indistinct object. Shallow niches at each corner of the pedestal house kneeling devotees, possibly Sariputra and Moggallana, paying homage. The sculpture dates back to 9th to 10th Century CE. The site of Lalitagiri is among the three important sites from Odisha along with Ratnagiri and Udayagiri, which form the Golden Triangle of Buddhism in the Early-mediaeval period in Eastern India, which has also been included in the Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage recently.
