There really isn't a better role for the development of Kobbie Mainoo than how Michael Carrick used Hayden Hackney as the uber-technical, box-to-box midfielder at Boro.
As the deeper option in a staggered midfield, you can maximise his elite (rare) small space ability & press resistance to ramp up those progressive numbers without asking him to do anything outside of his normal game of making short, accurate passes.
And that is the main area of his game that I expect to sky rocket — passing volume. Whilst this will likely correlate with an increase in touches as the deeper/linking midfielder in a possessional play system, I do think that we will also see an increase in the speed of his release to match his processing ability in order to punish unsettled defences.
In terms of flipping roles with his pivot partner & becoming the receiver instead of the passer, that too works well. It's rarely spoken about how much HH carried the ball under MC — ranking in the 98th, 99th & 94th percentile for carries — which would (obviously) suit KM's dribbling ability whether that's carrying into open space or taking on his man.
The most exciting thing is that this would probably be the closest we've seen to his role in the academy where he ran the show in all phases of the game.

My preferred set up under Carrick.
Lisandro Martinez playing as a DM alongside Ugarte, making those line breaking passes while being press resistant.
Ugarte and Casemiro can interchange as substitutes.
Bruno and Kobbie can interchange as substitutes since Carrick profile Kobbie as an attacking midfielder.
Yoro and Heaven holding the defence and Maguire can come in to regain match fitness.

United’s best Defensive Midfielder is hiding in defence as a centreback in plain sight and his name is Lisandro Martinez. United keeps on buying DMs who can’t pass while their best ball-playing No.6 is hiding at centre-back. If Lisandro Martínez played DM, half of United’s ‘midfield problems’ would instantly disappear. Lisandro Martinez has elite ball progression, he breaks lines with passes better than most midfielders. As a DM, he’d control tempo and resist the press. He reads danger early, steps into passing lanes, and tackles before duels happen—key for a modern day No.6 and also comfortable receiving on the half-turn, even under pressure. The advantage of this also, it frees an 8 (Mainoo, Bruno) to play higher without exposing the back line also Kobbie Mainoo can come on as a sub for Bruno in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Lisandro Martinez aggression, vocal, high standards. That bite in midfield sets the tone and can give that midfield a command that’s it’s lacking. Lisandro Martinez at Ajax was initially a DM and Lisandro Martinez has played as a DM under Amorim (if I’m not mistaken, in the second half against wolves) and it worked, I was sad and annoyed Amorim didn’t continue to use him as a DM. Lisandro Martinez is just being misprofiled.

I didn’t support Ruben Amorim just because he’s Ruben Amorim.
One of the biggest reasons I supported him is because the only way to break this cycle is by giving managers time.
And yes, if that makes me “Manager FC” then so be it. It's not about formation. It's not about tactics. It's way deeper than that.
If you still haven’t realised that the issues are so deeply rooted that no manager can fix them without at least three full seasons, then respectfully, you’re too young to understand football.

Looks like it will be Carrick then, how will his setup Man Utd?
Base structure
- Defend in a compact 4-2-3-1
- Attack using a 3-2-5
Build-up transition
- One fullback (usually LB) moves forward to support attacks
- The opposite fullback drops inside to create a back three (Maz could do this well). Or maybe play Licha LB and do this the other way.
- A holding midfielder positions ahead of the defence to aid build-up
Attacking movement
- The striker drops off to pull defenders out (suits the profiles we have).
- The AM (Bruno) runs forward into the space
- One winger holds the width (we might struggle with this as have 0 touchline wingers in squad, Amad/ Mbeumo prefer coming inside).
- The other winger moves inside to overload central areas
- The advancing fullback delivers crosses into the box.
Areas for concern
- Midfield options for build-up aren't really there.
- No touchline wingers that like to hold width, or natural LW.
