She really didn’t need to apologise. I think ‘theatre etiquette’ is exclusive to people in theatre. Don’t expect regular people who you want to attend to know what that is.

@_StevenKavuma It becomes a whole other thing with jukebox musicals, too. Someone going to watch The Bodyguard might actually think it’s a Whitney Houston tribute act. The dialogue from the industry is so defensive and entitled it’s just off-putting to anyone new to theatre.

I understand people need to respect performers. But when we talk about ‘theatre etiquette’ we’re opening up a can of worms to police new theatre audiences. Often who are not middle class. Often who are not white.
