@NathanpmYoung The best way to do it would be to tell everyone that many of the players have grey buttons. Leaving many to accidentally press blue. There wouldn't actually need to be any grey buttons. Just the idea that many may lose if blue is less than 50%.

@NathanpmYoung My view has settled too. There is nothing wrong with not wanting to gamble your life or risking your life to save people. What's wrong is being upset that blue won or being angry with people who didn't want to gamble their lives.

My current stance is that we should coordinate on blue but if the scenario varies a lot from the current one such that a reasonable person expects the threshold not to be met, everyone should vote red. I imagine this would create the occasional additional bloodbath but make those bloodbaths much less bad.

@theerealtao The problem always seems to come from the word "belief" So I just started saying "I don't know if God exists" instead.

"I don't believe in God" is far different from "I don't believe God exists".

@prerat I didn't have much interest in the morals vs logic debate, but this is an interesting idea. Is there a natural distribution to these polar mindsets and why is it distributed like this. The hunter/gather, daytime/night owl, leader/follower.

@BillWiIdin Renting is just buying except you don't own it and you pay someone else to pay the bills for you.

Renting is actually a smarter financial move than buying a house in 2026. But most of you are just emotionally attached to a 30-year debt trap.

The red-blue button experiment is occurring. The aliens running it single you out and inform you that blue is going to fail 49-51. However, they are offering you a chance to push a green button and make it so all who pressed blue live and all who pressed red die. Do you push it?

@joe_shipman I've always said that we should remove warning labels and let nature take its course. Guess which button I would press.

The red blue button divide is becoming clearer and clearer, and also stupider and stupider. The blue pushers are now reduced to claiming that “having one’s decisions depend on which logically equivalent but emotionally different phrasing is used is a good thing, actually”.

my takeaway from the red/blue button discussion is that if anyone asks, you say you pressed blue

@Mayzomatic I was thinking about it too. I was siding with red until I realized that if Blue survives. They have already shown violent intent in the X chats to those who choose red. So choosing red might actually result in 42% of people dying to a hate mob.

I was initially a red button guy. Seems like the obvious, more intelligent choice. Everyone in control of their own lives. No one needs to die, just press red However there have been so many people arguing blue that it in turn makes them correct. Way too many people are going to push blue regardless so therefore blue becomes the correct answer
Tim Urban@waitbutwhy

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If you press the blue button, everyone lives but has to answer polls about buttons every day. If you press the red button, everyone who has proposed a button thought experiment dies.
