Living in Japan for 6 years, I also think the root of discussion is the controversy between "rules" and "one's own moral sense".
In Japan, it's said "rules are rules", period. It doesn't need to be explained.
In the West, you need to explain why the rule was made into a rule.

In my life - of anything that I may have liked and pirated - if not going back to buy the ones I like, and deleting the ones I don't - I've spent far more on merch, than I ever would have on the game. So, if Square Enix wants to complain? They should flush all their merch down the toilet, too.

@magozone23 I will disagree with you on this one. If something can't be bought than using it is not stealing. Digital content doesn't work like physical one, when it copied no one is losing anything unless there's profit to be made, but when restrictions in place, there's no profit to begin.
