Trying to stay calm. This seems like a nice place for that.

@jblob95 @MercPurdy Vegas, Phoenix, Seattle, Portland, Denver, L.A. all care more about college sports. But if NCAA keeps its pricing scheme with no recognition of true demand, they’ll run into the same problem. Also part of the equation here is travel costs (food/lodging etc) are way higher too.

The Sweet Sixteen games also failed to sell out last year at Chase Center, with thousands of empty seats. Same issues. Prices too high, college hoops not as popular in the Bay as other places, teams from far away (Florida, Maryland, Texas Tech, Arkansas)
don julio@jblob95

@DarrenSabedra SJ doesn’t care about hoops. Should’ve been at chase center

"They" SAY a lotta things about Abe. I wonder if YOU know what Lincoln said when he finally woke up from a 3-day bender? "I freed WHO?!" (old joke)
Jim Koenigsberger@Jimfrombaseball

"They say that Abe Lincoln freed the slaves about 93 years ago and delivered the 'Emancipation Proclamation'. But it wasn’t until Larry Doby threw that left hook to the chin of Art Ditmar that the Negro baseball player was completely emancipated." William Jackson writing in the black-owned "Cleveland Call and Post." "Larry Doby is the first negro to fight on the diamond, despite not being dusted off because of pigmentation differences." "The Sporting News." In the first inning at Comiskey Park, with two outs and two on in the bottom of the first inning, New York’s Art Ditmar threw a pitch behind the head of the Sox`s Larry Doby. As the pitch rolled to the wall, Ditmar ran to cover home. Larry Doby warned Ditmar about the pitch, and then threw a left hook which dropped Ditmar flat on the ground. Chicago native and future White Sox player "Moose" Skowron floored Doby with a flying tackle from 3rd, which brought Walt Dropo into the fray. Dropo, who was 6-5, 230 pounds and a monster for his time, sat on Skowron and put him in a head-lock. Enos Slaughter stood above them trying to lift the 230 pound Dropo up by pulling on his shirt. Dropo got up, setting off a battering, hockey-style slug fest with Slaughter. At various times, “Whitey” Ford, Casey Stengel, "Jungle" Jim Rivera and Enos "Country" Slaughter were in the middle of it. Slaughter’s jersey and undershirt were ripped to pieces and his hat was backwards in one of the most famous photographs of the 1950's. After things settled down Billy Martin rushed into things and started in on Larry Doby. It took nearly a half-hour to restore order, and four players were ejected. Art Ditmar escaped ejection. In Jackie Robinson’s rookie season, 1947, Robinson was spiked purposely by Enos Slaughter, a Southerner who rumour held considered striking that year rather than play against the majors first black player. Make July 5, "Larry Doby Day".

🚨MANY House Republicans livid Senate passed a DHS funding deal without ICE and some CBP $ overnight and left “A bunch of cowards. They didn't even take a recorded vote” @AustinScottGA08, a Rules Committee member, said “This is not a done deal” A BIG crisis facing Speaker Johnson- who is is still weighing several perilous paths forward and doesn’t yet have the votes for anything. Hardliners still pushing attacking SAVE and sending back to Senate. Johnson huddling with leadership now. But House centrists are desperate to pass this TODAY. “I hope they do,” Rep Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa) told me W/ @ktullymcmanus politico.com/live-updates/2… @politico

@malber @NicoleAuerbach It isn’t the reality everywhere. Duke’s five starters began their career at Duke. This is boring and you’re missing a very easy point I made.

@WorkishFromHome @NicoleAuerbach Your point criticized player transfers. That's just the reality of all of college sports right now, especially programs in a rebuild like UM was. And yeah acad standards are relaxed for athletes (as at all schools) but there've still been MANY who were turned down due to grades

Dusty May: "I'll tell you what we say in recruiting — that we have what we feel is the academic profile of Stanford with the passion of SEC football for our athletic department as a whole, and usually those two things aren't merged."

@malber @NicoleAuerbach You can absolutely judge their athletic department’s academics on that. The whole “Michigan as an elite academic school for athletes” has always been garbage. It is an elite school for normal students but that’s irrelevant for football and basketball. Even moreso in this era.

You’re treating a cognitive‑screening task like it’s supposed to be a math contest. That’s not what it measures, and you know it. Serial 7s isn’t a math challenge — it’s a quick screen for attention, working memory, and processing speed. 1. Attention Can the person stay focused on a continuous mental task without drifting? 2. Working Memory Can they hold a number in mind, manipulate it, and keep track of the sequence? 3. Processing Speed How efficiently can they perform a simple mental operation under mild pressure? That’s it. It’s a quick screen for cognitive function, not a demonstration of mathematical skill. Well Dr. Brian, what do you have to say about that?

BREAKING: At his cabinet meeting, Trump just bragged about how hard the mathematical equations of his cognitive test that he passed were. FACT: The hardest mathematical equation on such a test is referred to as the “Serial 7s” Test: You start at 100 and keep subtracting 7, out loud: 100 → 93 → 86 → 79 → 72 → 65 → 58 → This is literally what he’s bragging about. My seven-year-old could do this.

@ddayen Good story. California hasn’t moved on from the identity politics that most Dems realize is a dead end. People are candidates solely because they are black/Latino/Asian etc. You see it in L.A. mayoelection. It’s impossible to be worse than Karen Bass has been, yet she is way up.

I profiled Tom Steyer's campaign for governor in California, where risks of an all-GOP runoff are rising. I think 1 reason is state Dems don't really believe in politics, in talking to voters & responding to concerns. If nothing else, Steyer's doing that. prospect.org/2026/03/24/tom…
