To be clear, I do think there are issues with women prioritizing careers at the expense of families, but honestly, it's usually the ones who are married and (often) have kids. Whereas the "girlboss" critiques usually envision an urbanite career woman shooing away marriage proposals to dedicate herself to a "fake email job," a phenomenon so rare it's really a silly thing to focus on

The girlboss theory of fertility decline is weirdly persistent, I think, because it makes people feel morally superior
Doesn't matter that the data doesn't support it, it provides an easy villain and that's what matters!

I think it's good government policy to help people have kids they want to have! I just don't want the U.S. federal government wrapped up in questions of how to drive up births to increase the Social Security Trust fund, or what have you. It's gonna be very bad at it, as I think these debates are helping to illustrate.

I really enjoyed this essay by @PTBwrites on why it doesn't make sense to blame "girl bosses" for declining birthrates, since the women who aren't having kids are mostly working-class and unmarried.
The whole debate, btw, reinforces my position that I am not a pro-natalist, and no one can convince me to become one. Too often efforts to increase the birthrate is just code for other cultural baggage we're trying to deal with.

@JillFilipovic I guess outside a context of viewing the man as the leader of your family when you’re married you’d view it as him clinging to his old identity. I see it as him keeping the name but now building something entirely new with it.
