Retreat From Darkness | WISHLIST NOW!
All DLSS 5 is doing so far is giving games a generic AI looking lighting, muting artistic choices in the name of a supposedly "realism".

28 years later I’ve finally played through the original Resident Evil 2 and it’s a certified masterpiece. I now have a deeper understanding of why the 2015 announcement of Resident Evil 2 remake garnered so much excitement. You’re talking about a reconstruction of one of the greatest games of all time. My first concern when deciding to play the original 1998 version was that I was not going to be able to handle the tank controls, but to my surprise they do become quite natural to use after about thirty minutes of extended play. Once I was over that hurdle, the pre-rendered backgrounds, cheesy dialog and graphics felt right at home…I was a 90’s kid with a PS1 after all. It’s immediately apparent that RE2 would be nothing were it not for the atmosphere that oozes out of every aspect of the design. The sound of your footsteps, the beautiful melody of a save room, the whispered hush of a moaning zombie or the calculated firing of your pistol as you navigate from room to room. There’s a joy in exploration I find in these older Resident Evil titles that I just don’t feel the same way about in newer releases. My first go around was Leon A/Claire B scenario, which I understand is opposite of what is now known as canon, but at least I’ll have the other option available for another playthrough. It’s fascinating being introduced to characters that are now so well known and beloved without all of that history and baggage already bestowed upon them. It’s clear to see why they were immediate action heroes in the 90’s video game space. I enjoyed my time with the original considerably more than I did with the remake, despite it also being an excellent experience. There’s so much more storytelling that’s done between the multiple scenarios that was left out of the 2019 game. I also never cared for the amount of screen time the remake gave Mr. X, which is thankfully alleviated here. It’s really quite remarkable what Capcom pulled off on their second stab at survival horror and how much of what they achieved still reverberates through the industry today. There are few games I’d speak this highly of and while I prefer to not give numbered scores, for 1998 this is about as perfect as it gets.
