@uwukko Hot take is that Duolingo is actually good because motivation is often the hardest part and my friend streaks keep me so motivated. Wish I could fork it but keep the social aspect, it’s missing a few really obvious things imo (bookmarking vocab into flash cards/personal dict)

The “forbidden experiment” — raising a child with no language exposure — is forbidden for very good reasons. But has anyone studied the opposite, what happens to children in extreme polyglot households? Like where they’re hearing 8 languages with equal regularity from birth?

@TheStalwart I know two kids doing very well in a tri-lingual household, if that helps.

unrelated but this reminded me of that time my second grade teacher disagreed with me and her response was "you'll be allowed to criticize me when you also have two degrees" so i went and got three, and along the way learned i was right incredible fuel, hatred and resentment

Scientists don't currently have an answer for why the speed of light (c) is what it is. We know that it's 299,792,458 m/s (and we even redefined the meter to be exactly 1/299,792,458 of the distance light travels in a second just to keep it precise), but we don't know why it goes that specific speed from first principles, or what combination of factors make it so. One guess (if you apply the anthropic principle) is that there exist multiple (possibly infinite) universes, each with a different set of physical constants, and the reason c in our universe is what it is is because that's the speed at which it's possible for physical matter to exist. We observe it as what it is because if it were different, we wouldn't be able to observe it because we wouldn't exist. But that's a conjecture. No one actually knows. By the way, the speed of light is more accurately thought of as the speed of causality.

I’ll never understand people that eat food in their car. Either order it from home or eat it there. Or at least buy and take it home. Can you imagine the toppings falling off and making a mess in their car.
