@airy_co If it came with Windows preinstalled, tons of people who have never heard of Steam would buy it for home and office use without a second thought.

i hope they don't flinch, steam machine and deck are more than consoles, they run a fully fledged linux OS that allows you to get work done i know they target a very niche audience, but it's such a powerful concept that i hope it goes mainstream
Dexerto@Dexerto

Valve says its $1,049 Steam Machine costs more than a PS5 because it refuses to sell hardware at a loss and make up the difference with subscriptions or game sales "The cost of the product is basically the cost of the components and what it takes to make it"

Now that I've had some time to think about it, I think I'll still be buying it. A few things make this worth it for me: - My first gaming PC - Small form factor - Just like with the Steam deck, the Steam Machine will have games specifically optimized for it because of Steam OS - Can still be used as a PC - From the little research I've done, it's simply not feasible to build something like this on my own without losing aspects like the form factor and optimization. - Even though I've never owned a gaming PC or any Valve Hardware, I respect what they're doing and the ecosystem looks attractive to me. - I do wish that it was cheaper but we have AI to thank for that *sigh* I do NOT want a humongous gaming PC tower. And I don't want to have to sift through files every time I want to do something. So, to me, it's worth it. 🤷🏾‍♂️

With the Steam Machine now priced north of $1,000, are you still considering one? Were you ever? What would you actually use it for?

@devilsaviour_ I built something like that and put it in my living room. I got rid of it because it was big and ugly.

i think the idea behind the steam machine is really good, making PC gaming into a "console" like how the steam deck was making PC gaming into a handheld like the PS Vita and DS but literally what's the point when it costs the same as a more than good enough PC

@Leezelbub @outonparole It's an anti-consumer standard. Subsidized costs in computing come from advertisements for things like Copilot, OneDrive and iCloud. It's the preinstalled OEM bloatware from HP, Dell and Lenovo. The Samsung and Google applications that can't be uninstalled without rooting.

@BladeMech22 Launching the controller first was a good call. People who bought it during the first wave and people who aren't interested are probably glad to have the option of saving some money to use what they already have.

@getrootarded Even at this price, it's not bad compared to the rest of the pre built market. It's not great, but I doubt you're going to get the same level of quality out of an Alienware. Plus, people complaining about A PC not coming with a controller. Why would it?! Use a keyboard!

@M_O_Z_G The people who buy it aren't going to be complaining about frame rates. In fact, we won't hear from them because they'll be too busy enjoying their machines.

@getrootarded Most discussions revolve around hardware for some reason, they ignore everything: form factor, dimension, support, OS optimization, as if they don't exist, or this doesn't matter. Everyone who wanted high performance, brought full-tower PC cases already.😀

@TRScott116 It will compete with more than just price. Being a premium product won't stop it from selling out, just like the Steam Deck did after its price increase.

@getrootarded The problem I have with the Steam Machine is that it can't compete in it's market, pre-built PCs, and based on Valves track record their most likely won't be any holiday discounts for it at the end of the year like other pre-built PCs have.

@Staremind04 I don't think about what that 63-year-old man does with his money after 30 years in the game. Valve is a software company; they've subsidized costs by investing R&D into Proton and SteamOS. Nobody has progressed Linux/ARM gaming more than Valve.

@getrootarded Its a realistic one but also a slap in the face to the fanbase if you think about it. Steam makes millions off software alone, Gabe just bought another yacht and a new house. Him and his company alone can sell the box at a loss and recuperate the money afterwards with one sale.

@TheSadKot It's not comparable to a locked ecosystem like Playstation, Xbox and Switch. Valve acknowledged why they decided against it. x.com/getrootarded/s…

@loser_vet People out of the loop thinking this pricing is anti-consumer would be in for a shock to see the entire stock bought out by businesses if they were sold for anything less.

@getrootarded Saying that Valve could have and should have sold it as a loss leader, subsidized by the 30% cut they take from every game sale, is not a bad faith argument, it's a realistic one.

@getrootarded Exactly, so many people are pointing the finger at Valve and expect them to just take a huge loss to make them happy. A lot of displaced confidence going around from people who don’t know what it is and aren’t going to buy anyway.

@lv_KillaWolf_vl @DebasedAnon @StephenMBlack82 I respect the foresight to stick to one standard for performance so that developers have a fixed target for optimization. The promise of 4k@60 is a result of most TVs being 4k these days.

@getrootarded @DebasedAnon @StephenMBlack82 Indeed, steam is basically selling it at cost and getting shit on for it. I feel that they would have been better off having this one at the current price point then having a more powerful one at lets say ~1300 A casual 1080p focused price point, then a 1440p/4k focused

@Amor_Lasciviae Bingo. People feel really smart after realizing that they can strip away all the conveniences of the Steam Machine and buy bootleg hardware to save a couple of bucks. Groundbreaking concept.

@getrootarded Yeah, the price is shit but the current market reality shows that it is aligned. SFF has always been more expensive when considering performance per $ as well. Every argument against it always walks away from SFF and typically uses bottom of the barrel parts to try and match.

@getrootarded also the amount of knuckleheads ignoring the fact consoles are all sold at a loss to get you into the closed ecosystem. selling for anything less would mandate locking you in with steam, which is antithetical to Valve's entire business model

@FumeGaming95 The ones saying that nobody is going to pay $1,050 for a PC for the sake of convenience are really out of touch. It's $50 cheaper than a MacBook air, which sells like crazy.

@lv_KillaWolf_vl @DebasedAnon @StephenMBlack82 Adding to your point, I haven't seen a company powerful enough to shrug off the changes in the cost of manufacturing components. Everything is more expensive and companies are trying to get more out of less at all price points.

@DebasedAnon @getrootarded @StephenMBlack82 Usually yes. But buy things like storage, ram, newer gpus in bulk. Ideally that would decrease the price because they are buying in bulk, BUT since they are in such high demand it would end up just increasing the price everywhere even more, for steam and us.

@botapp_x There's been a decade of development on SteamOS and a lot of resources being poured into Proton to make the software experience more seamless. The big picture is a lot more than just hardware; this is meant to be the equivalent of the moon landing for Linux gaming.
