Perhaps had the film utilized AI in its production it would have been $20M instead of $80M and Gray would have been allowed control over his vision, though one has to wonder what the A-T-L was on Ad Astra. I hope we someday get to see Gray’s director’s cut.
Reel Updates@worldofreel

JAMES GRAY admits that AD ASTRA was “taken away” from him by 20th Century during post-production. “That film was taken away from me […] That’s not my cut of the movie. It would have been a very different movie.” tinyurl.com/48runn3d

@AVARY Raises an interesting point. With AI it would be much cheaper and much easier for a director to go into a finished film and create a close to perfect director's cut, even if many of the takes or scenes were lost.

@AVARY The only way we'd ever see Gray's version of the film was if he got that sweetheart deal where the rights revert to him after 25 years.

AI in 2018/2019 was shit so thank God that didn’t happen. I too am curious what Gray’s version would’ve looked like but I’m a massive fan of the current cut, it’s got one of Pitt’s finest performances and the climactic scene with Tommy Lee Jones is some of Gray’s best work, so all in all it’s all good.

@AVARY I loved this film and read the original script; a good chunk of it was different, including the ending, for the better, though the final film is tighter and faster despite the silly sequence where Pitt accidentally "kills" an entire crew, which is more plausible in the script.

@AVARY I love Ad Astra. My favorite cinematography. It needed more peaks and valleys in vocal cadence but the heart of darkness bit and theme worked for me too. Curious to see his cut bc I already thought it was his best film.

@AVARY Ever make a “directors cut” for one of your films that never got to find its way to audiences due to the suits?

@AVARY It was a film about a man with daddy issues in space. Worst Brad Pitt film ever. Some scenes looked like they were filmed by students. Like come on man, you are doing a space film with brad pitt.

@AVARY Makes sense. That movie felt like it was just a push over the edge away from being great. Amitious premise and ingredients that somehow felt safe.

@AVARY Yes, it would be helpful to see the Director’s cut. And I don’t think it hurts the original movie, which was very uneven and not a success I don’t think.

@AVARY It was too slow and the voiceover arguably ruined it as most voiceovers tend to do …

Really? Wow. I loved that movie!! So maybe you’re right Roger or he is right but I really liked it in theatres and thought it was deep and beautiful IMO. 🤷 Maybe his version would end up like all the directors cuts of Blade Runner or the Abyss or Kill Bill the whole bloody affair where every version was still pretty great relative to changes and that’s awesome in my book! 😉

@AVARY Using AI in production often helps directors maintain stronger control over their work. Many hope a director’s cut of Ad Astra eventually becomes available.

@AVARY This was Pitt's Plan B that produced it and the budget supposedly ballooned past $100M after reshoots. Then 20th CF decided to edit away Gray's film after so much being invested? It's such a dirty business sometimes smh I would like to see his version too.
