@CodeRed_dev imo they should do the 3rd game of the series as the 3d one so they can call it "Big Game 3" with a small 'd' next to the 3.
English

@CodeRed_dev The PIT 2 did this... and frankly, I feel it was a complete waste of time and improved/enhanced nothing about the game. A proper sequel would have been awesome.
English

I think a lot of what people like about 3D can be applied to 2D while keeping the satisfying pixel art style.
On our platform we use a lot of 3D techniques for 2D pixel art, such as lighting, and bone animation, which whoever doesn’t think looks good compared to frame by frame should go look at examples such as Odin’s Sphere or Dragon’s Crown.
2D also allows more rapid iteration to focus on the features people really care about, like game mechanics and content.
English

@CodeRed_dev Not just rouge-likes but yeah, I think I prefer enter the gungeon's pixel art, though I'm sure the gameplay will make up for it.

English

@CodeRed_dev the game is technically already 3d it just uses 2d sprites now its 3d with 3d models. i think dodgeroll just wanted to do an artstyle change and theres nothing wrong with that. its still top down so i think gameplay will remain relatively the same. im excited for it
English

@CodeRed_dev It doesn't, they just wanted to do it, slay the spire 2 won't be 3d if you want something that isn't 3d
English

@CodeRed_dev are you telling me there's gonna be a gungeon sequel? if so, i'm too excited to care
English

@CodeRed_dev I know. So many games using a beloved pixel style and completely ruining it with the move to 3D. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited for this sequel. But still.
I assume it's because sequels have a felt need to be "bigger and better" and 3D sells that concept well
English

@CodeRed_dev I think paragraph §1379a: game development of roguelikes says "your sequel must be 3D or higher. Otherwise, the god of roguelikes won't be kind to you." But I could be wrong.
English

@CodeRed_dev Reminds me of the Ps1 era where games would go from pixel art to low poly in the sequel
English

@CodeRed_dev It gives you a lot of options, a whole new direction in fact!
English

@CodeRed_dev Often hard to improve upon perfection.. thus they move to a new plain of existence.
*So I can't wait for Enter the Gungeon VR.. >:D
English

@CodeRed_dev Because dev skillz need to be levelled up as well!
English

@CodeRed_dev Holy shit, it's real!
Look it ll work better for a game that isn't just a million bullets!
English

@CodeRed_dev Maybe, just to view it from a new perspective 😏
English

@CodeRed_dev Pixel art games should not have 3D sequels.
English

@CodeRed_dev I hate it when this happens. Losses the pixel spirit and visually looks worse in my view.
English

@CodeRed_dev Is that even true? Spelunky, Bind of Isaac (if you consider Rebirth a sequel) and Rogue Legacy were still 2D. Deal Cells was already orthogonal 3D from the start. I can't think of many 2D roguelikes where the sequels are 3D. Definitely not "every".
English

@CodeRed_dev I don't know if I prefer it, but I do like that the sequel tries to make itself suuuper visually distinct from the first game
It also scratches that "What would it look like in 3D?" itch that I felt about all kinds of 2D games I played as a kid
English

@CodeRed_dev Why not do it in 3D but isometric and lo fi pixel e.g. 2 or 4 times native.
English

@CodeRed_dev "Look what we can do now that we're popular and have a budget!"
