The 2013 Tigers might be the best team I’ve seen Detroit have C: Avila (92 wRC+) 1B: Fielder (126) 2B: Infante (118) SS: Peralta (124) 3B: Cabrera (193) MVP LF: Dirks (90) CF: Jackson (108) RF: Hunter (118) DH: Martinez (113) Verlander (4.8 fWAR) Scherzer (5.9) Cy Young Sánchez (5.9) Porcello (2.9) Fister (4.1) Still can’t believe they didn’t win the World Series that season.

@DatabaseHit @IYKbaseball Yes this is the team that should have won the World Series - they were a tad weak in the pen, but dominant everywhere else. The collapse in game 2 in thr Playoffs vs Boston, I still haven’t gotten over

@DatabaseHit They should have and would have won it all if Leyland didn't mismanage the 5-1 lead he had going into the bottom of the 8th inning in Game 2 of the ALCS in Boston after winning the first game in Boston.

@DatabaseHit The stat that still boggles my mind is the top five starters made 156 of the 162 starts. 2025 Tigers top 5 SP? 115 of 162.

@DatabaseHit It absolutely guts me every time I think about this Tigers team! I will never understand how Dombrowski and Avila couldn’t roster up a bullpen and a bona fide closer for this team. ⚾️🤬🤦‍♂️

@DatabaseHit You can thank Big Poppi for knocking them down in game 2 in Boston. Without that home run late in the game, Detroit goes on to win the AL and the World Series. That was a manager mistake keeping our struggling reliever in. That wouldn’t happen today with analytics…

@DatabaseHit This team was going to win it all, until Big Papi hit the grand slam. Firmly believe that. That swing of the bat changed the game and the series, Tigers could never recover

@DatabaseHit Jim Layland bringing in a Righty to face David Ortiz with the bases loaded cost us a WS.

@DatabaseHit It's a giant kick in the dick that they couldn't get a title for the best owner in all of sports... Yzerman/Lidstrom/Fedorov/Shanahan/Datsyuk/Z /etc. got him 4 Stanley Cups, but those Tigers teams between 06-15' or so couldn't get Mr.I a World Series.

@DatabaseHit No bullpen. Leyland committed to Phil Coke as his closer. Would have been better to use one of the SP as late innings guy, but no such luck.

@DatabaseHit Benoit was a 2.8 WAR player in 2013. 24 saves, 2.01 ERA over 67 IP. Gave up just 47 hits, K’d 73. He had a rough go in Boston but he was a very good all season. Drew Smiley was also good. The rest of the pen really suspect from day to day.

@DatabaseHit The wife scandal killed the team’s spirit. When Fielder belly flopped 5’ from base we knew it was over. It didn’t have to happen.
