PLEASE READ THIS: The congressional redistricting in Tennessee has nothing to do with race. I live in Memphis. This is the reality of the situation: Rep. Steven Cohen (D-TN) - a white dude - has represented Memphis in Congress for nearly 20 years. During his tenure, Republicans nominated a BLACK WOMAN as their choice FIVE times. Democrats could have elected a black woman but she was the wrong political persuasion. So, my question to the black Democrats - did you deny Charlotte Bergmann her seat in Congress because of her skin color or her gender? Facts matter. Memphis Democrats loathe black Republicans more than they do white Republicans.

Whether one finds your comment interesting or not is irrelevant. You have one question to answer. What criteria was used to determine the boundary lines of the district to which you refer? That is the issue of concern, not who was chosen to represent that district. Even your argument is racist.

@MarcAlanBalay @toddstarnes @ProfMJCleveland Population and Politics were the factors considered. To have a racially drawn district is unconstitutional and racist by definition. The TN GOP was exceptionally upfront that this was a political move to give TN a 9-0 republican representation in Congress

@GotThatVolInHim @toddstarnes @ProfMJCleveland You misunderstood my question which referred not to the redrawn version, but to the district as it was drawn prior to the Supreme Court decision. What criteria was used to determine THOSE boundaries?

@MarcAlanBalay @toddstarnes @ProfMJCleveland Yep! Population, as constitutionally required by TN’s constitution. Districts are required to minimize county splitting, and to have as close as possible population numbers. As drawn prior, it was a majority minority district, which is now understood to be unconstitutional

@GotThatVolInHim @toddstarnes @ProfMJCleveland No, majority-minority districts can exist if they do so geographically. What is unconstitutional is to configure boundaries specifically to engineer such a district, and that is apparently what was determined to have occurred to create the district for which you are so concerned.

@GotThatVolInHim @MarcAlanBalay @toddstarnes @ProfMJCleveland So let me get this straight. Memphis was not a racial gerrymander. It is completely centered in Shelby county which happens to be majority Black. So you are now saying ANY district that isn't majority white is racist... and that only whites should be allowed a majority district?
