Why did you decide on Unity? Why not Unreal, Godot, GameMaker?

Tried Unreal ... hated it, from blue prints, slow compile times, rigid interface and I had weird bugs where a prefab (forgot unreals name for it) lost variables due to a default setting... never tried the other ones... maybe gamemaker in the past... but other than that not even remotely on my radar

@UnityCodeMonkey I'm really glad I'm using the Unity engine - it seems to be great for VR. That being said, I think the most important thing is to find an engine you like, and to stick with it.

Unity just felt like the sweet spot. It scales graphically better than Game Maker. Also, and it's a shame we don't really talk about the nuts and bolts of game engines any more but "Unity" just has a really great UNIFIED workflow that IMO is better than most other engines. The very optimizations that make Unreal a graphical powerhouse also make it a tad more sluggish and clunky to work with as a designer/ coder. I really just love the universal nature of how the transforms and prefabs work at a base level. As you get better at doing things with gameobjects and tricks with transforms/ parents/ children, that improves your workflow in UI, and in working with scriptable objects for gameplay design, and it's this really holistic learning experience where every aspect of your game gets better as you become more accustomed with the engine. Not to say Unreal doesn't have its own awesome features, blueprints and all that. But IMO for the super small team, or solo creator, nothing allows you to explore and rapidly prototype gameplay quite like Unity does, and that includes pushing the ceiling of fun play too. When you can iterate fast and easily, your gameplay systems will ultimately be more fun in the end.

@UnityCodeMonkey Simple: Lots of documentation, super professional, supported by major console platforms. At the end, it's more on the side of the Studio/Developer rather than thinking about whether the game is going to be great or not with that engine.

@UnityCodeMonkey My manager said pick it up 2011. Back then before John Riccileto made it unstable, everything was easy to use. Now I use it because I have 9 yrs of legacy code and a game: Starfighter General. Unity needs you Monk if they're gonna turn it around
