Alcohol has basically been socially engineered out of society. After prohibition wa rejected, govs went stealthy. High price setting, sky high taxes, and (especially) ever lower DWI/DUI limits. Basically, gov't raised the costs well above the benefits for all but hardcore devotees, so increasing numbers have stopped drinking.

Alcohol sales are dropping like a rock in Canada and many are wondering why? Is it health, habits or recreational drugs? Canadians are drinking less because we don't have the extra money to party, travel, food delights its basics only!
