I was reading the thread about Tim Horton's and the use of temporary workers when there are many unemployed youth and I got to thinking. When did we decide we need so many fast food restaurants of so many types? Every street corner seems to have a gaggle of MCDonalds, Starbucks, Tim Hortons, KFC, pizza joints or any number of chain fast food joints....plus fast food outlets inside Walmart and other stores. Wife and I rarely go out for fast food, perhaps twice per year, then usually when we are on a long trip and need fast calories. Do most people actually go to these places regularly for their meals? I mean, I get picking up a coffee or meeting someone for coffee, but I don't see regular visitation being part of sensible dietary plans. How do these restaurants all stay afloat? Are they that profitable or are they all laundering money or some other nefarious undertaking? Or am I just the odd man out and everyone else eats at these places all the time?
