This week I had the extraordinary opportunity to spend a full hour with Micheál Martin (@MichealMartinTD), Ireland’s @Taoiseach (Prime Minister), discussing AI, the future of healthcare, and Ireland’s role, especially as it relates to the evolving role of health professionals.
What struck me most was something surprisingly rare: leadership grounded in genuine inquiry. Here was a leader who asked questions, challenged ideas, and - perhaps most importantly - listened. Not once was I interrupted.
As Ireland prepares to take on the EU Presidency, with an AI Summit on the horizon, I very much hope that patient experience - and how it intersects with AI - will be front and centre. This is where the real stakes are.
I was honoured to give the Taoiseach a copy of my book Dr Bot (he previously had agreed to launch it which is a privilege in itself) but even more meaningful was the depth of the conversation. And to have my twin sister Catherine (@Blease) invited to join us made it all the more special.
My sincere thanks as well to the advisors at Department of the Taoiseach, @GovIE including @MrPatMcP for making this possible.
A remarkable experience, and truly one of the greatest honours of my career.
Today is the publication anniversary of Pride & prejudice... To mark the occasion here are my top 5 medical memoirs where doctors become patients open.substack.com/pub/bleaseondr…

Patients worldwide are increasingly being invited to access their full electronic health records online. Could this kind of access protect victims from medical negligence or intentional wrongdoing? @crbleasebmj.com/content/379/bm…
Prosecution continued:
We are talking about these four defendants being those who are not interested in what that young woman wanted....
But that is not the modern world, that is not the rules of modern day society
