The amendment to the Magistrates Courts Act expanding the pecuniary jurisdiction of Chief Magistrates' Courts to UGX 200 million is a significant judicial reform. However, it comes with serious operational implications that must not be ignored. Thousands of civil cases are likely to be transferred from the High Court to Chief Magistrates' Courts across the country. This means: • Increased case backlog and workload for Chief Magistrates and Magistrates Grade I. • More miscellaneous applications, hearings, rulings, and judgments. • Increased lawyer–magistrate engagement time and courtroom management demands. • Greater administrative burdens on court staff and clerks. • Increased pressure on court infrastructure, transport, records management, and security. • Greater public expectations for timely disposal of cases. • Increased responsibility and accountability at the lower courts. As Government and the Judiciary implement this reform, they should also invest in the officers who will carry its weight. Salaries and facilitation for Chief Magistrates, Magistrates Grade I, and Administrative Clerks should be enhanced. Chief Magistrates should be provided with reliable official vehicles, adequate security, modern ICT tools, and sufficient support staff. Judicial reforms should be matched with resource reforms. I remember this day like yesterday? We were playing football at school and i got injured. Was in hospital for almost a month. But the following days while I was in hospital. My friends I played football with used to get a permission from school and come to the hospital to check on me. All they did was to come,make fun of the situation and go. I didn't know what it meant by then, but looking at this picture right now. Makes me wonder how humanity got us at a very young age.
