Article I, Sect 8 grants Congress the power to establish a uniform Rule of Naturalization. All the Naturalization Acts in your time period referred to Foreigners as Aliens and stipulated their underage children were only granted citizenship after the parents naturalized.

So no, the legal status of parents never crossed their mind.
Because it's not an enumerated power in the Constitution.

I introduced a Constitutional amendment to end birthright citizenship. The Constitution was never meant to guarantee citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil, regardless of their parents' legal status. It's common sense. It's constitutional. And it's long overdue.

Amazing how we have Republicans convincing their voters that they need to be legislating on imaginary problems targeting people they’ve never met, never interacted with, and if they have, they didn’t know it. All to avoid real issues. Leave people alone.

@CommonplaceThe Selective Jefferson quotes are doing a lot of cardio here. “Life, liberty, and limited government” apparently got left out for budget reasons. If you think Jefferson advocated for communitarian moral order, then this is likely the only Jefferson quote you’ve read.

From a legislative perspective, there's just no comparison. Its hard to even find historical comparisons that match the absolute success that DeSantis has achieved in Florida.

FWIW, the 2024 Republican Caucaus in Iowa only had a 15% turnout, to which Trump received roughly 7.6%.
