Taxes don’t trigger me.
I think it’s because from the very beginning of my career, whenever I received a commission check, I knew to put roughly half of it aside.
That half was never mine.
So I always thought in net terms.
If I knew I had $100,000 coming in, in my mind, from day one, it was $50,000.
Still the case to this day.

@jimiuorio Yes. I wish they’d sell it now. At least they passed on Spirit. That gives me a little hope.

@Tinoladobo @bdomenech If given $100m, most Americans couldn’t turn it into $1bn, let alone $275bn.
English

@bdomenech Lmaoooooo you're going to make me die from laughter are you tweeting this to suggest that a 245k investment from your parents is not a massive headstart that the vast majority of Americans could never dream of? 😂

Jeff Bezos was born in Alberquerque to a 17 year old high school mom who divorced his alcoholic dad before Jeff was 2. He worked at McDonald's before his grades earned his way into Princeton. He started Amazon in a garage with a 245k investment from his parents.
That's reality.

Someone can certainly *make* a billion dollars. That’s not the same thing as earning.
Growing fast and disrupting markets also often means chasing and wielding market power, political influence, and scale.
Take Airbnb. They heavily lobby politicians against passing housing laws to protect working class residents because it’s bad for their business model.
Airbnb could not exist at its current scale and size without the housing market destabilizations, displacements, and exploits that are supercharging the evictions of working people everywhere from Puerto Rico to Jackson Hole.
Now young people are planning for a future where they will never be able to afford to own a home while others have 20 and live off renting it out to them at extortionate rates with zero protections. Yes, a tiny amount of people can make billions of dollars doing that. And millions of everyday Americans are bearing the cost.
Paul Graham@paulg
Sure you can earn a billion dollars. I've been teaching people how to do it for 20 years. The way you do it is to start a company that grows fast. You don't have to do anything bad to make a company grow fast. You just have to make something people want. paulgraham.com/ace.html

@EsotericCD @michaelbd It was a very good album. I just refreshed myself of it - it came out my senior year of college and I played it a lot at the but outside of One I haven’t heard any of the songs in decades. I still prefer the 80s U2 though.
English

@michaelbd In the era, I used to be "too cool for school" and dismiss ACHTUNG BABY but there really isn't a wasted song on it, is there?
And I think "The Fly" might be one of their most transcendent achievements.
English

And U2’s Acthung Baby was better than all of them. Same year

Dan Crenshaw gets testy after Bill Maher’s audience boos him for trashing Obamacare.
DONNA BRAZILE: “American dreams should be affordable for all people.”
CRENSHAW: “Health care is expensive because Obamacare made it expensive.”
[Audience boos loudly]
CRENSHAW: “It created a market that is completely unviable. I love that you believe narratives, folks… You got to look at the facts and health care policy, what actually happens in insurance markets.”
Bill Maher pointed out that Obamacare may have technically given people health care, but the deductibles are now so outrageously high that they can’t even use it.
Once Dan Crenshaw was done sparring with the audience, he got into another argument with Maher’s guest, Donna Brazile.
Crenshaw is officially out of Congress in January 2027 after becoming too unpopular to survive the primary.
Saying he would “kill” Tucker if he ever met him was really a low point. Are you glad to see him go?

@JessicaTarlov It is not a mistake for dismissing someone who is wrong.
English

Dismissing AOC for talking about the rich in terms that a majority of Americans agree with is a mistake. The idea that the system is rigged to benefit the rich and that the working class up to the middle-class cannot get ahead is one of the most salient political arguments. Trump used to make it himself! Then gamed the system for himself and his friends - including the fraudsters he’s pardoned - of course.

I lived and/or worked in NYC from 1992 to 2020. You’d have to actually pay me a lot of money to go back. Nice to go back for work a few times a year but I’m happy to leave after a few days.
