NEW: My office analyzed NYC’s urban forest—more than 7 million trees across our streets, parks, and private land.
We found that neighborhoods with the least tree canopy tend to have the highest heat vulnerability, and also have the highest rates of childhood asthma.
Trees are essential infrastructure. They are about public health, flood prevention, economic development, and equity.
NYC’s goal is 30% canopy cover. Achieving it will require sustained planting, and also stronger maintenance, better protection of existing trees, and long-term funding.
