LA isn’t like NYC. The mayor’s office works very differently in LA NYC is a classic “imperial mayor” city. The mayor appoints most agency heads and commissioners, has direct authority over the school system, and much more besides. He’s always a main character in the media, and often a national figure as well LA is nothing like this. The mayorship is weak. She doesn’t control the schools, the council is much more powerful relative to the mayor, senior appointments often require confirmation, and so on. Directly the opposite of NYC, the LA mayor is unusually invisible. Most Angelenos wouldn’t recognize Bass if she was behind them in line for coffee. So when people ask “how can LA put up with more of Bass”, that’s why. People just aren’t thinking about the mayor in LA. In NYC there’s a much tighter accountability loop for the mayor. (This is also one of the ways that NYC is a “real city” in a way that LA is not)
