Admin Post: Last night something happened that made my heart swell so big it almost hurt… in the very best way. ❤️ Back in the fall, sweet black Lab puppy Mars, a service dog prospect, spent a few precious weeks with us for some exposure training. He was only 5 months old — playful, curious, and a little unsure of the big city world. Whenever something new worried him, he’d quietly tuck himself just behind my wheelchair, peeking out from his safe spot while I gave him all the time he needed to feel brave. Last night, I brought baby Rottweiler Kenji (our big Moose) to his very first group class without Chesnyy. After class, the dogs got some joyful off-leash play time… and one of the staff brought Mars in to join. He entered the room a bit nervous — so many more dogs than he normally sees in the training room, so much energy. But the moment his eyes found me… he came straight to me. ❤️ Not bouncing wildly, but gently placing his front paws on my lap, covering my face in soft, trusting kisses. Then he stayed right there, pressed close, choosing me as his safe place in a room full of uncertainty. He could have gone to his breeder. He could have stayed with the staff who see him every day. But out of everyone in that room… he picked me. The girl in the wheelchair he’d only known for those few short weeks last fall. Even once he relaxed and started playing, he kept coming back to check in with me, like I was his anchor. I don’t know if there’s any deeper compliment a dog can give than saying with their whole heart, “You make me feel safe.” And as if that wasn’t enough to melt me completely… Kenji was an absolute superstar on his very first night in this class. The youngest dog there by far, he tackled targeting (even into a tricky plastic tote!), stayed mostly focused through all the distractions, redirected like a pro, stayed perfectly polite and quiet, and had a wonderful time playing with the group. A few folks even mistook our growing Moose for Chesnyy! It was great. My heart is still overflowing. Two special boys reminding me why we pour our hearts into this work — the quiet trust that lingers, the beautiful growth, and the pure love dogs give so freely. 🥹❤️

Many of you know that the man that owns the land I have my rescue kennels and house on had a stroke. Sadly, Tom has passed away. The damage he suffered was too much. He wasn't only my landlord; he was a close friend that will be greatly missed. The older you get the more you lose it seems. Today I will be meeting with his son to learn the outcome here. We have had a few meetings and talked on phone several times. I have done all I can along with others to show him the value of what we do, and all the pups saved. Even the local Animal Control officer met with him promoting us. Tom bought this land in 1979. For peanuts. With the sprawl coming north from Raleigh, through Wake Forest and into the northern counties of NC the land value has skyrocketed. I know the last 10 years Tom was constantly being offered to buy him out. They are putting up subdivisions left and right. Undoubtedly the son has done his homework and knows this too. So today I will learn our fate here. I have done a lot of legwork in the meantime and have places at other rescues for all the pups here. That won't be an issue. We have had several rescues backs here over the years and they now will have ours. We have also been exploring options in the area to continue local rescue but haven't found a reasonable option yet. Whatever happens I will continue rescue. If not here locally, somewhere else. The son is an odd guy and tough to read. Hoping he sees doing good as valuable as the land he just inherited. Either way we will finally know something today. Thanks for all the support. Any prayers would be appreciated.

Casper was never afraid of storms. Thunder lightning, fireworks those type of things never bothered him. But a sneeze would really scare him. If I was laying on the bed and sneezed he would jump on top of me till he calmed down

Freedom Farm update— A lot of you have asked why I’ve been quieter, not as active. Lil Wayne’s been struggling to walk, but he’s still pushing. Took him to the vet today—he’s down 30 lbs in the last year, mostly muscle. Doc says he’s a bit underweight, but that actually helps (less weight to carry). The good news: new meds and renewed hope. For those checking in—I appreciate you. It’s degenerative myelopathy. We’ll keep him moving however we can. 🐾

Casper’s favorite thing was taking the tops of bottles or anything that had a top. It’s started when he was young Id buy the gallon water jugs like milk comes in. He could get the tops off, never break the seal or leave teeth marks. If I was drinking a pop he’d sit and stare at me like hurry up and finish that. When I got done I replace the cap and flip over my shoulder into the sleeper. He would jump into the back and take the top off and bring it back. A couple jars of peanut butter were licked clean because he took the tops off and helped himself after I forgot to put them away.

6 months old, built like a moose on steroids who ate a whole truck for breakfast, and this absolute UNIT is STILL my Baby Rottie Kenji until he has his 5th birthday. Fight me on it, I dare you 😤 He’s serving full professor realness in these glasses today — like a tiny Einstein trapped in a linebacker’s body — dropping truth bombs: learning is rough as fluff, but being smart is hot as hell. We had stopped at a McDonalds. When I got out I left my window about halfway down. When I walked back out there was a group of little kids by the truck just a giggling because Casper was in the drivers seat. Casper had his head out the window watching the kids no barking just look like cool little hoomans. Casper loved lids so I took him out of the truck and he did high fives with all the kids. The kids loved and so did Casper. He even scored a few French fries lol
