Give me literally one example from the text where Tolkien portrays orcs as anything but evil. Seriously, I'm dying to be proven wrong. Quoting a letter is at best an academic exercise and at worst a capitulation to authorial intent over what was actually written.

@FestersQuestWav @RatBastardGames These orcs demonstrate a willingness to be bad in the way they want, which implies an ability to become good -- free will. I don't think a book that features a character like Smeagol should be read as encouraging Manichean moral readings, though yes, orcs are 2D in Tolkien's text
