One of the most radicalizing moments of my life was when I learned that they just stop collecting social security taxes on money earned over like $150K. Like you just suddenly keep 3-6% more money on all money over that threshold.
Fuck You I Quit@fuckyouiquit

Every dollar earned below $184,500 a year has a Social Security tax of 12.4%. Everything after that cap is exempt. If we lift this cap on the wealthiest earners, Social Security would be fully funded till 2070. The cap should not exist.

There's a good reason for this. But performative ignorance is a powerful weapon in the game of politics. It's just another instance of we the people getting what we deserve, I'm afraid.
Senate Budget Democrats@SenateBudget

MURRAY: Is it true that people making under $184k pay a 12.4% Social Security tax rate? DAHL: Yes. MURRAY: And the rate for someone making $1 million? DAHL: 2.2%. MURRAY: So, a 12.4% tax for people making less than $184k, but 2.2% for a millionaire or .0002% for billionaires.

The bromance between American and Japanese cultures is one of the most hopeful and astounding stories in foreign affairs. One Pearl Harbor, and two nuclear bombs is a heavy load of baggage. If we can bury the hatchet, culture to culture, and be where we are today, there should be hope for anywhere else in the world too.
BaseballHistoryNut@nut_history

Major League Baseball is aired in the morning for Japan. So technically they eat breakfast with it being on television. Here’s their #openingday commercial. No hyperbole, when I say this, it might be greater than any US MLB commercial I’ve seen. Well done and worth the watch for any baseball fan.

The more apt comparison is April 15, aka, Tax Day. Like that, Election Day is more a hard deadline for completing the activity. That doesn’t mean that filing/voting prior is invalid. Furthermore, tax returns postmarked on April 15 are not considered late.
Aaron Rupar@atrupar

Alito: "We have lots of phrases that involve two words, the second of which is 'day.' Labor Day, Memorial Day, George Washington's birthday, Independence Day, birthday, and Election Day. They are all particular days. So if we start with that, if I have nothing more to look at than the phrase 'Election Day,' I think this is the day in which everything is going to take place."

@TheBrancaShow There’s a real question of whether or not mail-in voting survives at all without these grace periods.

SCOTUS to Decide: It’s Election DAY, not Election MONTH! LIVE at 11 AM ET! Link in reply! Yesterday, the Supreme Court heard oral argument on the question of whether states were legally permitted to count as valid ballot that they received only AFTER election day. Roughly 29 states currently have laws allowing for the counting of late ballots, sometimes for weeks after election day (looking at you, California). This extending counting of late ballots is, of course, perhaps the most fertile ground available for electoral cheating—see how short your candidate falls on election day, and then just keep counting “new” ballots until your candidate has caught up and won. In this case of Watson v. RNC, a Mississippi law allowing for ballots to be counted even if up to 5 days late has been challenged as violative of federal statutes calling for a single election day. If the Mississippi law is ruled against all “late ballot” statutes everywhere will also fall. Join me LIVE at 11 AM ET as we replay the SCOTUS oral argument, along with my legal insight and analysis! Episode #1255.

What's the chance of having Elon Musk do a virtual chat about rockets with my 5th grade deaf students who are studying space stuff? Like 1 in a million?

I injured myself while in the AF. Was doing a job on an F16 and due to faulty equipment, fell over the side, onto the sill of the cockpit while holding up a 220 lb ejection seat. I had to get a sacroiliac fusion at 25. After a year and a half of failed physical therapy and being undeployable, they finally put me up for medical dishcarge. During ny evaluation, they did the standard range of motion tests. When attempting to bend over, I stopped because it hurt. The Dr asks if that was as far as I could go, to which I replied "I can probably go further but it will hurt". He asks me to show him, I did and that was that. I was discharged at 20% disability, even though I was now permamnetly disabled. The process is incredibly simple and vacuous, it rewards those that will lie and punishes those that are honest. I've since had 2 more spinal surgeries and shoulder surgey before I've even turned 40. I have hearing loss, herniated discs (cervical and lumbar) and arthiritis. Point is, the system is broken and needs attention.
Erich Hartmann@erichhartmann

Military Disability fraud is rampant, but for some reason is ignored, allowed… and even encouraged. This kind of obvious cheating ruins the system for those who actually need it: heroes who served our country honorably and were injured in the process.

@nytimes "upend voting" could use a qualifier. Like, upend late voting. Upend illegal voting. But instead, the NYT is vagueposting.
