“If Embiid stays healthy, the Sixers are winning the East...I think the Sixers, as presently constituted, are the best team left standing in the Eastern Conference.” @getnickwright thinks Philly is a very tough matchup for the Knicks:

I'm sorry, but this piece reads like an alternate reality. It frames Trump as a strong, steadfast supporter of Ukraine "in the face of hostility inside his party and his administration," thanks to Marc Thiessen and his columns. What, what, and what? semafor.com/article/05/03/…

Lamar Alexander
Lamar Alexander@SenAlexander·
In 1974, when I was 34, I won the Republican nomination for governor of Tennessee. I lost the general election because voters were mad at Republicans about Watergate and because people said I was a “stuffed shirt.” So, when I wanted to run again four years later, my wife, Honey, said, “Wait a minute. First, I want to know 𝘸𝘩𝘺 you're running. What do you hope to accomplish? And second, could we have a different sort of campaign?” So we talked about it with some other people, and she said, "Well, why doesn't Lamar just do what he likes to do? He likes music, he likes to walk, he likes to meet people, he likes the outdoors." And then she said, "Why don't you just walk across the state?" And you don't walk across the state in a blue suit. So she and I went down to Friedman's Army Surplus Store on Hillsboro Avenue in Nashville, and we bought all the red-and-black plaid shirts they had. We added it to the two I already had, and I wore one of those shirts every day on my 1,022-mile walk across the state. I did my best to shake hands with 1,000 people every day and spent the night with 73 families, most of whom I had not known before. I sank deep into the music, stories, and character of our state. I saw firsthand that Tennessee was third from the bottom in family incomes, there was little interest in bettering the education system, and the "anything is possible" spirit I grew up with in Maryville was not prevalent in the community.

Something to consider: In the wake of the ‘94 Republican wave (again, partly due to the creation of majority minority districts), there were several party switches that helped GOP gains in both chambers. In the Senate, that included very conservative Richard Shelby of Alabama and fairly moderate-liberal Ben Nighthorse Campbell of Colorado (the only Native American in Congress).
Guy Benson@guypbenson

I’d be astonished if he became a Republican because he’s way too progressive, but could much more easily see him leaving the Democrats to become an independent — especially with Dems sharpening the knives over his relative handful of moderate “heresies”…

@VinnysCorner1 I think it’s a good second date idea. The first date should be to get a sense of interests — like if they’re into sports (baseball especially)!

Sirius XM First Wave Deep Cuts plays a lot of Scritti Politti, and I have this vague recollection that girls in middle school liked them. Maybe? It was forty years ago, so it's entirely possible I made that up just now, or am confusing them with a different band.

So, I edited one word in Jim’s second paragraph: “But other than maybe a half-dozen high-profile issues, he’s not a Republican. He’s a Democrat. And as much as Republicans would love to have one more member in their ranks, it doesn’t make sense for a guy who has more traditionally Democratic positions than Republican ones to change parties and run for election as a Republican.” Other than Fetterman, who might this be describing (circa 2015)?
Jim Geraghty@jimgeraghty

There’s a lot to like about John Fetterman. It’s great to see him making such a solid recovery from his stroke. He really did help fight the stigma against asking for help with mental health problems. He’s willing to stand up for what he believes in, whether his party likes it or not. But other than maybe a half-dozen high-profile issues, he’s not a Republican. He’s a Democrat. And as much as Republicans would love to have one more member in their ranks, it doesn’t make sense for a guy who has more traditionally Democratic positions than Republican ones to change parties and run for reelection as a Republican.

Politico: President Trump has offered Fetterman his patented total and complete endorsement plus a financial windfall to the Pennsylvanian if he becomes a Republican. A handful of Senate Republicans are also gently feeling out Fetterman and responding to his concerns over the prospect of defecting from the Democratic Party. If Fetterman does flip, according to officials who were given anonymity to talk about sensitive matters, it will be thanks in large part to his deepening friendship with a pair of senators and their high-profile spouses: Sen. Dave McCormick (R-PA), and his wife Dina, and Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL), and her husband, Wesley.

Politico: There is an intense effort underway by Republicans to flip Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) into becoming a Republican. Fetterman told Politico on Friday he’s staying a Democrat but when one senior Republican recently brought up the idea of becoming an independent to Fetterman, he absorbed the suggestion and didn’t embrace or reject the overture. politico.com/news/magazine/…

Had Spirit Airlines been allowed to merge with Jet Blue, it would have given them much more resiliency.   Thanks to @SenWarren, @PeteButtigieg, and all of their friends in the Biden Administration who backed their enthusiastic opposition to the Spirit-Jet Blue merger, dozens of regional airports will now lose service and thousands of jobs will now be lost.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made a false claim in his testimony to the House on Wednesday. Then he repeated it in his testimony to the Senate on Thursday. Hegseth said Wednesday: “In 2024, troops were depl… – that was Joe Biden by the way, Joe Biden –  were deployed to polling locations in 15 states." He continued, "2024 – Joe Biden – troops deployed to polling locations in 15 states. Explain that one to me.” Here’s the explanation: Hegseth’s claim isn't true. Not only were all National Guard activations for the 2024 election done by individual states rather than Biden, all 11 states that responded to my inquiries said *no troops* there were sent to polling places. Rather, they said, Guard personnel were in other locations helping with election cybersecurity, doing other behind-the-scenes support work, or not actually activated for the election after all.
