Bolivia 🇧🇴 has the highest capital city on earth...
Some of the most dramatic landscapes in South America (looking at you, salt flat)…
And a cost of living so low it borders on surreal
Santa Cruz has modern infrastructure, a young population, and a growing expat community that nobody's written a think piece about yet
And yet when people list "underrated South American countries" Bolivia barely comes up
It just doesn’t market itself. And there's no digital nomad influencer scene there yet
But I’m FAIRLY sure it will eventually catch up

Planes/food/seating is superior to other Latin lines but honestly it’s their service that makes the difference.
Flight crew are all nice and actually seem to enjoy their jobs plus Panama goes direct to Atlanta where immigration is fastest

I fly Avianca “business class” often.
Not because I don’t understand the current offer, but because there is no real competition on some of the routes I frequently fly.
The hard product offered on their non 787 routes is abysmal. It would literally be impossible to design less comfortable seats.
@avianca Please bring back a decent regional business class product. Charge 2 or 3x for the seats. People will pay it.

Living in Latin America with a family is completely different than being a single guy
When you're solo:
- $1,000/month gets you a nice apartment
- You can rough it in sketchy neighborhoods if you want
- Cheap food is fine, even street tacos get the job done
- Medical care? Not a concern
With kids:
- $3,000+/month for 3-bedroom in safe area
- Need legitimate schools ($500-2000/month)
- Proximity to real hospitals matters
- Infrastructure can't be optional
- Safety becomes non-negotiable
The "cheap paradise" suddenly costs more than living in a mid-tier US city
But here's what nobody tells you...
The lifestyle trade-offs are still worth it IF you choose the right base
Places that actually work for families:

Indeed, I come from Latin America—I’ve lived in Venezuela, Colombia, and Peru—and the difference is enormous. But you notice it even more after living in the United States and then going back to countries in our region.
For example, in December we were in Kentucky, and at the airport there was a nursing room. We went in there with our one-year-old baby, and we had a private room just for us, where our baby was able to take a one-hour nap while we waited for our flight.
These are very small things that Americans take for granted—things they don’t even realize they have—that in other countries are still very far from existing.
Likewise, last week during some construction work, an electrical line was damaged, and our building lost power for about half an hour. But they quickly blocked off the street, and linemen arrived to restore power. In my country, that would have taken weeks.
There’s even a bit of culture shock when Latin Americans get used to living in the United States and then return to their home countries, whether for vacation or to move back permanently.
Americans should be more appreciative of their country and the opportunities they have, even though social media algorithms sometimes make them feel like everything is going wrong.

It's really weird, but living in LatAm for almost 1.5 years has made me much more proud to be from the USA. It's so easy to take the United States for granted when you live there. The efficiency, the cleanliness, the wealth, the opulence, the speed of everything. It's truly a one-of-a-kind place. It's obviously not a perfect country, but damn, there is way too much negativity floating around the internet about the USA. Yeah, yeah, yeah... It's built on the back of forever wars and slavery. That's the cost of an empire. But that aside, there's not another place on Earth with the same opportunity and access to essentially everything you'd ever need to live a good life. I realize I'm in LatAm for now, but this is less of a reflection of the US, and more of a reflection of my own urge to travel and learn Spanish and immerse myself in other cultures. It's truly impossible to know what your fishbowl is like if you've never left it for substantial amounts of time.

- Santiago 🇨🇱 airport to city uber, 21km: ~26 USD
“Long-haul” uber cheaper in Chile for some reason!
Of course, for shorter distances Colombia is still significantly cheaper

I flew out at 7 am three days ago. Shuttle from domestic terminal to international is every 15 minutes
International security line is 7-10 minutes. Once through take the train to your terminal and voila.

@realEstateTrent Flew out of atl two days ago. Shuttle to international was a 13 min bus ride. International security was a 7 min. Spent the rest of the morning watching sprinters.
(Yes I had an international flight but first leg was domestic and still required check in from there)

3rd baby had insurance and bill was 33k. Mind boggling.
Since then everything is cash pay: dental plans, PCP, etc.

A healthcare story:
My girlfriend (now wife) got pregnant at 18. Her parents health insurance didnt cover pregnancy (dont know how that worked) but it wouldn't cover it
We went to the local hospital (a very nice one in OC/So Cal) and they had a "cash plan" $3500 included all doctors visits, she got to choose her OBGYN, the epidural and 48 hours in the hospital. We had to pay it in 6 payments monthly
Our 2nd child we were married and had health insurance, self employed. We went to the same hospital, same Dr's. They billed my insurance over $18,000 of which I had to pay 30% ($5400) plus the monthly premium and co pays
3rd child, we had insurance. I went back to the same hospital, same Dr's and asked for the cash price again. Paid $3500 in 6 installments and never told my insurance

I’ve been in Brazil for an entire year.
When I first came, it wasn’t some romantic “move to paradise” decision. I’ve lived in 9 different countries over the years. The novelty of being foreign wears off fast. Eventually you’re just a guy trying to live your life somewhere.
But something about Brazil is different.
It’s the way people look you in the eye when they talk to you. The way a random conversation at a coffee shop turns into a real connection. The way strangers go out of their way to help you instead of brushing you off.
Service feels human here. Not transactional like in the States.
There’s a warmth that’s hard to explain until you experience it. It’s not perfect. No country is. But it feels alive.
After bouncing around the world for years, this is the first place in a long time where I don’t feel like I’m “trying it out.”
I just feel at home.
And that’s something I didn’t realize I was looking for.
