Respectfully, Rick is wrong. The bill as written absolutely disempowers municipalities from fighting back against sharia communities. Only one of two options, it’s either Mayes Mamdani or it was a massive blunder, the kind that should be a red flag to all Texans. I’m willing to give Mayes the benefit of the doubt and suggest that he didn’t mean to neuter the ability of cities to fight back against sharia communities, but his signing statement is pretty damning in expressing very specifically that it would protect sharia communities against cities that don’t want them. I’ve worked in public policy for a long time. The bill opened a dangerous door and was badly conceived and the intent literally extended these sharia community protections to mosques and the land they own. It is what it is, and Chip Roy and the Federalist authors are 100% correct to raise this concern so that voters can ask if they want someone who does something like this defending Texas at this level.
