North Carolina firefighters put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities and keep families safe. I spoke with their delegation about the need to​ strengthen firefighter retirement benefits, update outdated emergency response standards, and secure critical DHS funding — commonsense steps to enhance public safety across NC.

In Western North Carolina, we’ve seen firsthand how storms and natural disasters can devastate our forests and leave lasting damage across our mountains. The Post-Disaster Reforestation and Restoration Act of 2025, which I co-led with @RepPettersen, just passed the House. This bill ensures we’re not just cleaning up after disasters but actively restoring our forests. This is one step towards protecting our mountains for generations to come.

More than a year after Hurricane Helene, Marshall, Swannanoa, Micaville, and Green Mountain are still without their local post offices. I met with the @USPS Postmaster General David Steiner to push for expedited solutions and reopened facilities. Reliable mail service is essential for our rural communities, and I’ll keep working to ensure no one is left waiting longer than they should be.

North Carolina lost more than a legislator—we lost a friend, a colleague, and a dedicated servant to the people. I had the privilege of serving alongside Mike in the NC General Assembly, and I can say without hesitation that his commitment to our state, his constituents, and the principles he believed in never wavered. Whether in moments of agreement or debate, Mike always brought sincerity, conviction, and a deep love for North Carolina. Beyond the work, I will remember him for his character—the conversations, and his lighthearted spirit. I know the folks back in the state legislature will miss the smell of chili wafting down the hallways from a simmering pot on a hot plate in his office. Please join me in lifting up Mike’s family, friends, and all who knew and loved him during this difficult time. North Carolina is better because he chose to serve. Rest in peace, my friend.

The BRIC program is a vital, cost-effective tool that helps communities prepare for and withstand natural disasters. These funds were critical to Western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene, which is why I introduced the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) Act to reinstate and reform the program. After pushing for its return, I’m excited to see this funding will soon be restored—ensuring our communities have the resources they need to rebuild.

It was great to welcome @RepChuckEdwards to @conexpoconagg. His support for infrastructure investment and policies that strengthen western North Carolina’s workforce helps ensure equipment manufacturers can continue building stronger communities.

Preparing students for college, career, and life, McDowell Early College is empowering young leaders every day. I had a great time speaking with the 10th grade class and answering their thoughtful questions about public service and leadership. ​The future of Western North Carolina is bright.

This extension gives families additional time to repair homes, finalize insurance, and secure permanent housing—providing the support they need to rebuild stronger than before.
