The Social Security Administration provides vital services to seniors, families, and individuals with disabilities across Western North Carolina. Representatives from the American Federation of Government Workers briefed me on staffing challenges at the Social Security Administration and discuss ways to ensure constituents continue receiving the services they depend on.

Changing the clocks twice a year is an outdated practice that disrupts daily routines for millions of Americans. That's why I voted yes on the bipartisan Sunshine Protection Act, to make daylight saving time permanent nationwide, with states able to opt out for standard time. This commonsense reform means more daylight in the evenings for families, workers, and students.

RESULTS is a nonpartisan, grassroots advocacy organization that trains everyday citizens to build relationships with members of Congress in pursuit of ending poverty both domestically and globally. A few Asheville volunteers stopped by to discuss the Child Tax Credit, which H.R. 1 expanded to $2,200 per child with annual cost-of-living adjustments, providing greater support for families.

A strong national defense is one of the federal government's most important responsibilities.  That's why I voted for the FY2027 National Defense Authorization Act , the largest national defense investment in our nation's history—to strengthen our military, support our troops and their families, and keep America prepared to meet today's threats.

As Western North Carolina continues rebuilding after Hurricane Helene, maintaining reliable government services remains critical. During today's @HouseAppropsGOP hearing on government shutdown reform, we examined ways to improve the appropriations process and reduce the risk of future funding lapses that could disrupt disaster recovery efforts and other essential services.

During Hurricane Helene, AM radio stations across Western North Carolina helped keep communities informed when other forms of communication were unavailable. To protect access to AM radio in vehicles, I’m backing the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act. This bipartisan legislation is a commonsense step to ensure Americans can continue relying on a trusted source for news, weather, and emergency information.

When Hurricane Helene knocked out cell service and power across Western North Carolina, radio provided the critical emergency information that helped keep our communities safe. I met with the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters to discuss protecting AM radio, including H.R. 979, the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, which I cosponsored to keep it standard in every new vehicle.

The violence in Asheville is devastating for our community. Please join me in praying for the families of those who lost their lives and for everyone affected by this senseless act. Those responsible must be brought to justice and fully prosecuted. The people of Western North Carolina deserve safe communities, and that requires policies that hold violent criminals accountable.

Small businesses are the backbone of Western North Carolina's economy. During an Appropriations subcommittee hearing, I questioned SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler on the challenges our small business owners continue to face while recovering from Hurricane Helene.

Accurate, timely forecasting saves lives. I toured the @NOAA Weather Forecast Office, which provides forecasts, watches, and warnings for a 46-county area spanning WNC and surrounding areas. During Hurricane Helene, this office kept emergency managers briefed around the clock, informing evacuation decisions and emergency response as the storm unfolded. Thank you to Steve Wilkinson, Trisha Palmer, and the whole team for the work they do to keep WNC safe.

. @CruisingNC11 rolled through Saluda for the town's beloved Coon Dog Day parade, joining floats, firetrucks, and plenty of dogs for one of Western North Carolina's best summer traditions. From the 5K Fun Run to square dancing under the stars, Coon Dog Day is small-town charm and community spirit at its best.

Appropriators questioned Supreme Court Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Elena Kagan to review the Court's FY 2027 funding request. I asked about the Court's IT budget, specifically whether it includes funding for AI-assisted legal research or document review tools — and what safeguards are in place to protect the confidentiality of the Court's work. As technology changes how institutions operate, it's important that oversight keeps pace.
