@ChrisMartzWX We need more raw data collection, everywhere. One way we could achieve this would be making every Starlink terminal a mini basic weather detector for solar insolation, barometric pressure, humidity, temps etc, although temps may be higher on a roof. More raw data would be good.

Two things can be true: 1⃣ Mankind contributes to global warming, which can lead to climate change. 2⃣ Climate change is not an existential threat to life on Earth that requires Big Government and a radical change to energy policies. There is a lane for that position, which is the lane that I am in, and is rooted in actual scientific evidence. Just because you agree with point #1 does not mean we need radical far-left policies. And, just because you may agree with point #2 instead does not mean that our industiralized economies do not have some impact. But the fact is that the range of natural variability is so large that being able to really detect an anthropogenic impact outside of land use change (e.g., urbanization) is difficult to do without computer models that are artificially tuned to back out the forcings, which are not real observational evidence. @HighPeaks77 @AJamesMcCarthy I actually agree with James 100%. The whole UAP/UFO issue has to be scientifically falsified before affirming it may be true. So far, after 60+ years of following this, I have yet to see or hear of any credible evidence that there is any actual proof of alien biology or material.

I’ve followed him for years and he’s one of the best astrophotographers out there. Take a look at his work. He’s not a debunker. So if you disagree with his arguments, do so in a civilized manner. @GrahamLKeegan That ~1 C rise since 1850 is mostly accounted for with warmer temps in the northern hemisphere, in winter & at night. Not to mention UHIE bias in historical temp measurement. So on balance, it is a little less cold in the NH, with natural warming since LIA driving the average up.

What does it cost to launch something into orbit? This starts with @NASA Apollo Saturn V and projects forward to @SpaceX Starship. The exact figures are debatable, but it clearly shows huge progress, especially recently with commercial reusable rockets. Orbital data centres become viable at around $250/kg: we're getting there. Also fun that I've flown 2 of the rockets on the chart :) Amazing progress in such a short time!

@Gaurab We will figure out kerogen some day at a higher price point for oil. I bet against shale oil/gas 25+ years ago & lost since the tech finally showed up. Similarly with methane hydrates/clathrate on the deep ocean floor which reserves outnumber all fossil fuel fuels combined.

The next oil boom will happen once we figure out how to extract from kerogens. The Green River Formation holds 4.285 trillion barrels of oil equivalent. That is more than 15 times Saudi Arabia's entire proven reserves. It is the largest hydrocarbon deposit on Earth, and the United States cannot produce a single commercial barrel from it. The reason nobody can crack it is molecular. Kerogen is not oil. It is a solid organic polymer locked inside rock, insoluble in every known solvent. Converting it requires pyrolysis above 300°C and returns barely more energy than it consumes. The energy return on energy invested sits around 1.5 to 1. Shell spent 30 years on this. They drilled heater wells and froze the surrounding groundwater into a containment wall to cook the rock underground. They quit in 2013. ExxonMobil tried running electricity through propped fractures to heat kerogen in place. They quit in 2015. Estonia has been surface-retorting oil shale since the 1920s and it works, but only at Estonian scale, on Estonian-grade ore with higher organic content than Green River. Every serious American attempt used brute-force heating and 2000s-era chemistry. Catalytic approaches to kerogen conversion have advanced since then, but nobody has gone back to try. The largest hydrocarbon deposit on Earth has been sitting untouched since 2015 because nobody can figure out how to get the oil out of marlstone.
