@OnDisasters En route from the UK to New Zealand via a stopover with my brother in LA, he took me to the Planes of Fame at Chino. As we pulled into the carpark, the Museum's SBD was heading down the runway. Beautiful sight! I learned later that this plane actually saw RNZAF service in WWII.

The Dauntless is known as the Dive Bomber that, by sinking four carriers at Midway, helped "break the back" of the IJN and start the changing tides in the Pacific. It was such an effective aircraft that it outperformed its successor, and the nickname "Slow But Deadly" (from its SBD designation) was rightfully earned.

The Douglas SBD Dauntless was one of the truly great aircraft of World War II, playing a major role throughout the Pacific. On this week in 1944, our Douglas SBD-6 Dauntless was accepted by the US Navy and was delivered a week later to NAS Patuxent River in Maryland.
