My parents lived for many years in historic Old Town Portsmouth. In a beautiful home built in 1880 facing the Elizabeth river. At one point, maybe 15-20 years ago High Street was thriving. New businesses and restaurants, retail and art galleries had come in to the darling little downtown area.
My mom opened a stationary and gifts boutique that was incredibly popular.
Then corrupt local Democratic leadership capitalized on the politics of envy. Convinced minority voters that they were somehow being harmed by this explosion of commerce. Instituted a major tax to get into the old town area. A “stick it to the man” tax program. (“The man” was small business owners like my mom).
Eventually, they drove all the businesses out because the foot traffic dried up with the new taxes.
My parents and many others who had kept the historic district alive have since left. The historic buildings are starting to fall into disrepair. Corruption and crime have taken over the area. (if you remember, the infamous video during the Black Lives Matter riots of the guy pulling down the statue onto himself and ending up in critical condition in the hospital, that was Portsmouth). It’s incredibly sad.
These kind of people always build their political careers by convincing the envious to destroy what others built.
It never occurs to them that it never makes their own lives better, their own communities better. But it does make women like this rich and powerful.

Tyler Bowyer as co-Chair.
No one cares more about Republican base strategy on a grassroots level than these two.
It would mean Republican majorities for the next 50 years.

Hey Loudoun County, heads up:
Your Board of Supervisors is creating a new county-taxpayer-funded "short-term rent supplement program."
Applicants can qualify for six months of rent payments without having any work or citizenship requirements. Applicants can reapply as needed.
FISCAL IMPACT: Per the proposal, "the fiscal impacts are unknown at this time."
Now that the federal ARPA funds can't cover the rent, Loudoun County taxpayers are being asked to pick up the tab in the county's coming 2028 fiscal budget.

A proposal with sweeping consequences for Loudoun County was quietly placed on the “consent agenda”—a mechanism meant for routine items that pass without discussion. There is nothing routine about this. Brought forward by Supervisors Juli Briskman @SupBriskman and Koran Saines @Koran4sterling, this plan would create a taxpayer-funded rent supplement program with: ❌ No work requirement ❌ No minimum income requirement ❌ No citizenship qualification criteria That is not compassion guided by common sense. That is policy without guardrails. Attempting to move something of this magnitude through the consent agenda—without debate, without scrutiny, without public input—is not just inappropriate. It’s unacceptable. Loudoun County families are working hard, paying rising costs, and doing their best to stay afloat. They deserve transparency. They deserve accountability. And they deserve to have a voice before policies like this are even considered—let alone advanced. This proposal raises serious, unanswered questions: ❓Who qualifies? ❓How much will it cost the tax payer ❓What limits exist? ❓How do we ensure this helps people move forward rather than trapping them in dependence? These are not minor details. They go to the heart of fairness and responsible governance. Sound policy requires balance—compassion paired with responsibility, support paired with expectations. This item must be removed from the consent agenda immediately, opened for full Board debate, and subjected to a proper public hearing. That is not political. We held a breakfast meeting today with our kids to discuss our will, healthcare directives and legal stuff.
Child 1: I am not going to bury you, I plan to take you to the taxidermist and post you up by my fireplace so we can talk during the Seahawks games.
Child 2: Will the church let us play Mom’s tweets in a PowerPoint presentation at her memorial?
Child 3: Which fishing rod do you want us to bury you with, Dad?
The jokes never stopped and I’m so darn proud of them.

The Republican Party of Virginia needs to have a serious conversation about why it pursued a strategy guaranteed to make Spanberger the Governor, and why it is currently on track to guarantee re-election for Mark Warner.
The status quo is not OK. Discuss - don't hide from this.
