@sripalsama @WARNTracker I'm not particularly concerned about a big jump in layoffs. UI claims updated today - take a look. Just not much happening. It's been flat since 2022.

I'm seeing lots of tweets about layoffs, so want to post a general reminder. The USA is really, really big. The median month since 2001 has had 1.9 *million* layoffs.

Some of the things I look at in assessing whether there are lots of layoffs happening are: - JOLTS bls.gov/jlt/ - UI claims dol.gov/ui/data.pdf - WARN notices (@WARNTracker)

@besttrousers @TherumFollower Matt, where are you getting the 8,000 number from? The Y-axis is logarithmic which might be confusing visually- It's around 20-30,000 laid off employees a month for the last year (300k total reported on WARN in 2023 per my previous tweet reply). Thanks!

@TherumFollower @WARNTracker Ah, I see it's from @WARNTracker. Most layoffs aren't required to have WARN notices (note that the graph say ~8,000 layoffs occur in the average month. The actual number is closer to 2 million!)

We have good data about layoffs! The last three years are the years with the *fewest* layoffs. That's part of why folks are saying the economy is good!

@jgpuck99 @DiMartinoBooth @amazon @profplum99 @jgpuck99 to clarify: when the companies announce layoffs (i.e. "Meta will lay off 10,000 in March 2023"), that includes global jobs. But WARN data (our data) only includes U.S. worker layoffs

At least 320,000 employees were laid off in 2023 in the US, according to public government data records, up 68% from 2022, when 190,000 employee layoffs were reported.

@Econ_Parker @jessefelder @SoberLook Ahh, wasn’t sure if Yellow had to file WARN. Here’s what I’m seeing from Bloomie terminal (last data point August). Also, the chart in the original tweet is pushed forward two months. So maybe it is Yellow? Looks like they filed late July so not sure if that leaked into August

@Layoffsfyi counts the entire 10,000 in the site's sum from 2022. The closest thing you can get to US-only tech layoff data is to look at WARN data (gov-mandated layoff reporting). I run @WARNTracker , an aggregator website for these US-mandated layoff reports

.@nytimes interesting piece nytimes.com/2023/07/25/bus… but 1 nit: "large technology companies have laid off more than 386,000 workers nationwide since early 2022" Pretty sure "nationwide" is incorrect. @Layoffsfyi aggregates layoff data happening in the US AND internationally.
