St. Louis Hawks fans throw Snicker bars and eggs at Rick Barry during Game 6 of the 1967 NBA WCF. Rick Barry on the fans in St. Louis: “I was being seen on TV commercials and in ads for Snickers candy at the time. They had bought so many, I deserved a raise from the company.”

5.4 blocks per game sounds about right to me. I estimate 5.3 B/G for Wilt's last season, 1972-73. I've been trying to estimate Wilt's (and Russell's) blocks. I don't have anything definitive yet. But here's the start: 1) I started by anchoring the stats of the best blockers who we have block stats for: Eaton, Mutombo, Mourning, George Johnson, Olajuwon, Robinson, etc. (I didn't include outliers who didn't play many minutes: Manute Bol and Shawn Bradley, notably.) 2) Based on Eaton's, etc., BLK% per FGA, I extrapolated stats for Wilt's/Russell's context and minutes played. (Many more FGA in Wilt's era, and Wilt and Russell played lots of minutes per game.) 3) I assumed that Wilt and Russell would have higher BLK% early in their careers. I assumed their BLK% would go down a little over time as other players learned not to challenge them. 4) Almost every observer at the time (including Russell himself!) thought that Wilt blocked more shots that Russell did. So I included that. 5) Russell estimated that he (Russell) blocked about 5% of opponents FGA. I have him at 5.00% BLK% for his last 3 years, and 6.23% overall. 6) Here's my estimates: Wilt averaged 7.18 B/G for his career, and Russell: 5.99. 7) I suspect that my estimates are on the high side.

Doug Ives of the Long Beach Independent, consistently reported Wilt Chamberlain's figures in his game stories. 446 blocks, which comes out to 5.4 blocks per game for his final season. @bball_ref has recently updated their database to now include Wilt’s block total.

@arhooptalk @JesseGladsaget @bball_ref Amazing. Have you ever seen the film of him stripping Connie Hawkins in the playoffs? Lightning quick hands. Btw, Prime Video is coming out with a documentary on Jerry on April 16th.

@WiltStats @JesseGladsaget @bball_ref Check this out. I just called a friend to tell him about the stat about Wilt and we got to talking about West. He said he was watching a game in 1973 where Jerry stripped Maravich off the dribble.

@arhooptalk @JesseGladsaget @bball_ref I found a few games where West had 10. I have a 12-steal playoff game against PHX in 1970. And another game where he had 7 steals in a quarter against Seattle.

@JesseGladsaget @arhooptalk @bball_ref Bob McAdoo was the rookie of the year that season and in all of the wire stories about his win, it was mentioned that he blocked 216 shots for the season:

Michael Jordan on Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game: “There’s no way I’d have the stamina to get 100. I don’t see how anyone could. It’s not possible. I couldn’t withstand the beating I’d take running up and down the court 48 minutes.” (Dec. 9, 1990)

Watch any All-Star game from 1951 to 1990, and you’ll see a massive difference in effort and intensity. The players had pride in being chosen. No showboating. Mutual respect.

Kevin Durant: I've been watching all star games from the 80's to the 2000's and the intensity the older generation been talking about... *KD shakes his head* I don't know if I've seen it Anthony Edwards in the crowd agreeing with KD

The Boston Celtics 3 AM strategy session against Kareem Abdul-Jabbar before Game 7 of the 1974 NBA Finals. Bob Cousy: “It meant moving Dave Cowens out in front of Jabbar and taking the gamble, of course, of losing Dave on fouls early.”

@DimeDropperPod @pinkhoopsss Hannum wanted Wilt to focus his energy on defense and rebounding because he was too limited of a scorer with the injury. The other side of it is Wilt gets scrutinized for not listening to his coach and being selfish, taking too many bad shots and not passing enough.
