All students deserve a classroom that supports their learning & we all play a role in making that happen. We encourage you to revisit this conversation at your convenience & explore additional insights by searching for the hashtags #TeacherEd #Growthmindset

@RutgersAltRoute A5. Assessments should not just be multiple choice questions that rely on student recall. Assessments should give students opportunities to show off what they know about a topic. #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset

This morning's 5th and final Q is on assessment #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset “You can enhance or destroy students’ desire to succeed in school more quickly and permanently through your use of assessment than with any other tool you have at your disposal.” – Dr. Rick Stiggins

@RutgersAltRoute A5: I mentioned this in a previous answer, but please allow your students to revise incorrect answers on their exams and give class time for misunderstood concepts! School is not just about report cards and grades, spread positive learning!

@RutgersAltRoute A5 With common assessments in my grade level I feel like it is tough to sometimes give multiple chances for students to show their growth on certain subjects I’d like to give maybe an assessment in the beginning, middle, and end of a unit to track growth #TeacherEd #Growthmindset

Feedback is a compass for improvement and not all feedback is created equally. For Q4 share your content area and consider your best practices and those you would like to try #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset

@RutgersAltRoute A4 One on one conferences with students when giving feedback on papers and assessments in my ELA classroom. I usually give a glow and grow. Never saying they do not get something but on the right track to success #TeacherEd #Growthmindset

@RutgersAltRoute I need to work on being consistent in my language. Working with 7th graders can take a toll. At 8:00, I am fine walking the straight and narrow, but by 2:30, it is harder to stay positive, especially when teaching a core subject at the end of the day. #GrowthMindset #TeacherEd

Framing, or how teachers introduce new concepts and tasks to students, is the focus of Q3. Framing can steer students to a fixed or growth mindset. It helps students feel free to be a work in progress as they learn. #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset

@RutgersAltRoute A3: use words like “yet”, “the next step”, “craft”, and “process” to encourage students to expand the paradigm to go beyond finishing something and being “good”/“bad” at it. This celebrates the process of learning or completing tasks rather than an end result with judgment.

@RutgersAltRoute Assignments and assessments are opportunities to "show what you know". It also helps me (the teacher) figure out what needs to be reviewed or expanded on. Ss appreciate getting to help the teacher! #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset

@RutgersAltRoute A3 Make sure to not say something is wrong but instead on the right track when asking questions in my classroom. I can allow students to make attempts on assignments and classwork so that they can track their progress and not feel like they have one shot #TeacherEd #Growthmindset

@RutgersAltRoute Building positive relationships are essential to creating a productive classroom environment, but I also realized that students need to be able to relate to their teachers. I am transparent with my students and share personal experiences where my mistakes did not define me.

@RutgersAltRoute Q2: I teach a writing class, a field of study of which many students can feel intimidated (or, worse, bored). My approach is to be as positive and supportive as I can of 6th graders, and to challenge and push 8th graders so they can grow. #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset

For Q2, consider the expectations you communicate to students (verbal and nonverbal) through your classroom climate, course material & response opportunities #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset Tip: Be specific to your content & connect with others using a # like #ArtsEd #litchat #scichat

@RutgersAltRoute A2 Teachers can always tell students that they can always learn and change. Also letting students have attempts at something instead of one chance on assignments. Giving meaningful feedback to help students grow #TeacherEd #Growthmindset

@RutgersAltRoute A1: Mindset inherently presents a lot of challenges and opportunities for learning and development because default it plays a huge role in a student's motivation and attitude towards academics -- therefore if the mindset is offkey then learning will 1/2 #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset
