The favorite parlor game among most national security “experts” I know is debating who would be a better Secretary of War. Enlisted, officers, civilians…. it doesn’t matter. When he speaks, everyone leans in and listen. That’s not optics. That’s leadership. I’ve been covering defense news for twenty years and I’ve never seen anything like it. What’s critical is having someone who can take that group’s work and make everyone listen up and pay attention.
