This outcome reflects sustained, determined advocacy by CIJA, supported by thousands across our community, to ensure Canada has the tools needed to confront organizations linked to terrorism. With the adoption of the 2025 federal budget, the government now has clear authority to dissolve corporations identified as listed terrorist entities under the Criminal Code. We appreciate Industry Minister Joly’s role in advancing this necessary, long-overdue step. The Combatting Hate Act passed in the House of Commons this week.    That’s a huge step forward in our mission to build a stronger, safer country where everyone — no matter who they are or how they worship — can live free from violence and intimidation.

Al Quds Day has become an annual platform for antisemitic hate and extremist rhetoric. In today’s climate, this raises serious public safety concerns. I call on the City to take the necessary steps - up to and including an injunction - to cancel the demonstration.

Yesterday, I visited two synagogues in Toronto — one recovering from the recent horrific shooting, another repeatedly targeted by vandalism and hate. These acts of antisemitism are completely unacceptable and those responsible must be found and justice must be served. Law enforcement at all levels are coordinated around this effort. Incidents like these have been growing at an alarming rate. This should not be happening in Canada and we will do what it takes to eradicate antisemitism. The federal government currently has legislation before parliament to toughen sentences and protect religious and cultural spaces. We’re also sending targeted federal funding that will train law enforcement and Crown prosecutors to more effectively investigate and prosecute hate crimes. At the same time, we must get to the root of this issue. Canada’s new government is committed to working upstream to counter radicalization and the conditions that allow antisemitism to take hold. As Prime Minister Carney put it: Jewish people must be able to live their lives openly, freely, and safely. That is not a hope. It is a commitment. Canada will always stand with the Jewish community.

It is with tremendous sadness that our family learned today that my beloved wife, Tara Baran, has passed away. We thank Ottawa Police, OPP Kemptville and OPP Parry Sound for all of their efforts. Please pray for her, for our children, and for all those living with mental health struggles. My thanks to the many who have reached out. We ask for privacy as we mourn as a family. 🙏☦️
