Last night I was chatting with a friend — a Chinese undergraduate — who is visiting Hong Kong for the holidays.
He made me chat with him in English to help him practice since he's too scared to speak Mandarin there.
“I don't want to be discriminated.”
“Discriminated AGAINST,” I said.
“Oh yeah, discriminated against.”
Many from the Chinese mainland are acutely aware of being looked down upon when visiting the SAR, just for being mainlanders.
Another friend went recently on a work trip and did a test. In one restaurant he spoke Mandarin, and in another he spoke English. It's not scientific by any means, but he said there was a stark difference in staff attitude towards him.
Whenever I visit HK, I insist on using Mandarin EVERYWHERE because of that fact. Some pretend they don't understand, but I won't slip into English. Fuck 'em!
