US-born Indians like Vivek and Usha (and myself) never do this. Also, the most educated and successful tier of Indians born in India also don't do this. I just went to a banquet of Indian executives/founders in Silicon Valley (200 people) at the premier SV Indian tech conference (TiECon), and none of the Indians there (not even the housewife/soccer mom wives) were eating rice with their hands. Most of these are India-born people. This tier clearly knows better. As this is the only tier of India-born Indians I interact with, I truly was not aware that there were any English-speaking Indians who did this. I thought it was only still done by rural, semi-literate people. The fact is, using half of one's hand to scoop up liquidy rice and slurp it is just gross to onlookers. To insist otherwise is the exact same psychology as an obese feminist who demands that the world see her as the new standard of beauty, and the consensus view of onlookers simply does not matter. Uncivilized Indians cannot simply demand that onlookers not have a visceral grossed out reaction. Frankly, I would not do this on Internet livestream even if offered $30,000. If anyone doubts that, make a legally binding offer, and see me turn it down rather than debase myself to the Internet. Yes, I will turn down $30,000 rather than do what many Indians insist is normal behavior. Table manners matter. The absence of such is an indicator of poor hygiene in all other areas, low reliability, no empathy for not grossing out others at the table, and frankly, low-status, as this reveals you are not part of that successful, sophisticated tier of Indians. Also, when zoos give gorillas and chimpanzees a bowl of rice, if the apes are given a wooden fork or spoon for the first time, they readily use it, and get angry if it is taken away. So even they have in instinctual sense that this is an obvious upgrade. A choice to reside even below their instincts tells the world something about you. Now, to be fair, Americans are not blameless either. KFC's marketing slogan is 'finger lickin' good' (gross), and I have seen white guys eating ribs get barbeque sauce up to their wrists (gross). But two wrongs don't make a right, and they don't defend poor table manners so militantly as uncivilized Indians. The reasons uncivilized Indians give are extremely unscientific (i.e. blind beliefs). Anyone who doesn't know the difference between eating something dry (a french fry, taco, or samosa) with fingertips, vs. putting half your hand into liquidy rice and slurping, is not equipped for a debate on this topic. Why am I writing this? Well, as more non-Indians interact with Indians, the non-Indians should know that the civilized tier of Indians described above don't do this. Plus, many Western-born teenagers/young adults wish they didn't have to see their India-born parents do this (show my comment to your parents/aunts/uncles to assist your argument). Thus, the non-Indian does not have to pretend this is something that does not gross them out, much less do it themselves if you visit India. Also, India is still 50-70 years behind advanced economies in public health, sanitation, and infant mortality. Outdated practices like this don't help matters. Yes, Arabs and Africans also eat liquidy food with their hands, but they are wrong too, and except for countries with oil wealth, these countries are also in the same bad shape as India on public health metrics. Lastly, why give extreme racists on X, who are usually utterly wrong about Indians, something to be right about? Don't given them their broken clock moment. Again, note how the rajma image on the right has a fork. Take the hint.

On insta, at the end of the caption, they added that some reports are saying that he is a Nepali. Such irresponsible journalism is only providing credibility to the misinformation which has intensified online hate against Indians.
