@SirWrender @rms80 I think, also you can kinda of think of it as a interpolation problem.. like a textured mesh zoomed in with bicubic sampling isn't nearly as distracting as seeing individual splats.. Makes me wonder if anyone's tried training mesh textures like splats.

@rms80 This is literally just a resolution problem. If you zoom in on a photo you see square blocks. With 3DGS you see little fuzzy shards. If you have a higher resolution scan, you get more detail. Those "criss-cross patterns" are literally individual gaussians, like pixels.

gaussian splats scenes look amazing at a distance and dissolve into nothingness up close. Would be gr8 if some graphics researchers would invent a way to do better...IMO this is not really usable as a 'snapshot of reality' if you can only 'explore' it from far away...

There has never been a better time to preserve our history. Gaussian splats are effectively immersive photographs - a snapshot of reality, preserved forever to explore. 🏛️✨ @PlayCanvas SuperSplat lets you walk through historical monuments in your browser as if you were actually there. 🧵

@SadlyItsBradley That camera placement & count worries me so much. I can't imagine the tracking volume is very good.

So I guess Sharp finally opened up (crowdfunding) Pre-Orders for their lightweight LCD XR headset that is meant to be tethered to a PC or a phone I first saw a prototype of thing at CES 2023.. They use a pretty novel dual path pancake lens to achieve a higher light efficiency

@FlyoverCowboy @hare_ware_0 @heyasucks @KatDoes3D Eotech projects the reticle out to ~200 Meters in front of the sight, as per their own materials on their website, every sight they’ve made has depth, every holographic sight that exists works this way

Here's why your optic's reticle needs to have depth, and not just have the reticle stuck to the glass. Both of these animations are the exact same. The only difference is how far out the reticle is being rendered. #b3d

@AlexCaswen @heyasucks @KatDoes3D I've never used a real holosight, only devices that work the same way as a reflex, like HUD's in cars and AR glasses. Do the reticles themselves have depth? I've never understood the value of them over reflex, not even VR games really show a meaningful difference.

@AlexCaswen @heyasucks @KatDoes3D Isn't that effectively the same thing once it reaches your eyes? The curvature of the mirror optically shifts the dot further out rather than the holographic grating doing that? If the red dot is optically at the glass, then when you focus on the target it would become too blurry

@DeadsetAnime @3DxDEV7 @xeofrios Eh? Go look at some reference. Look at what your legs do when you bend them, both aren't the most realistic, but the second looks way better than the first.

@hare_ware_0 @3DxDEV7 @xeofrios That part is obvious hence the word simulation. The point I'm making is why? It's not deforming correctly, you're getting unwanted motion and It's just not as practical as the previous ways. Also, most sims require some limited weight painting else where does the effect end?

@TheFoxipso @TheBonkMaykr Clicking around I can't figure out how to move an image node, but if you just want animated film grain they added a built-in node group for that.

@TheBonkMaykr Another victim of something that's deprecated, but they didn't document the new workflow, or I can't find it, and now all the tutorials I can find are out of date and useless. I just want simple film grain on this clip! I'm probably doing something wrong but there's no help.

Are you telling me Blender removed the Texture node from the Compositor but their replacements don't let you animate the coordinate space, so you can only get a single static frame rather than, say, randomized noise?

@SadlyItsBradley I remember Beat Saber using the alpha channel for what seemed like bloom or something and that was causing problems in Monado for a bit... was that intentional so you could do this? Side note: CloudXR is a fork of Monado from what I understand

CloudXR allows you to key out any “Alpha layers” from OpenXR games A great example of this: Beat Saber It basically becomes a Mixed Reality game with all of its great visuals and effects staying at a high fidelity

@TheFoxipso Unironically video editing has definitely gotten wayy more meaningful work done on it than Texture Painting has since the original texture PBVH stuff dropped.

@DragonA65843948 @SadlyItsBradley Dedicated streaming radios and not tied to Meta or Apple. It's a PC on your face. Also, there aren't any headsets that tick all of those other boxes under $1K except second hand Quest Pro's.

@SadlyItsBradley I'm starting to see less value in the steam frame. Virtual desktop lets every headset with eye tracking take advantage of foveated streaming and the resolution will be very similar to the quest 3. What am I missing about the frame? My view is drastically changing.

The first PC VR local streaming client that takes advantage of visionOS 26.4’s built in Foveated Streaming framework is coming to TestFlight very soon! It is called ClearXR and taps into NVIDIA’s OpenXR runtime: it already performs much better for PCVR gaming than ALVR

@Lunayian It bothers me that people don't realize that gen image models are just looking at the image and trying to fill in the gaps to make it more coherent.. the same exact thing your human brain does when it sees a blurry picture. It GUESSES, it's guess is not that special.

"This design is actually uncomfortable" Well, good thing that's not the design. You fed a 2D mock-up/sketch of one angle of the device alongside a 300px (functionally smaller) image found in firmware to an LLM, and the model tried its best.

@GloriousEggroll @M00nSh4rd Low key the CV1 and original Vive are still pretty solid for PCVR. They're pretty low-res but that's the only super major deficiency.
