@JustinMacmahan I think it was a very bad idea at the time. If he had good advisors, he clearly ignored them. His floor was nowhere near zero. He signed for $700k at 16 and was a Top 20-50 prospect at 18 when he took the loan. Could make sense for others, but not him.

Hot Take: These deals aren’t as evil as they seem. Most guys will make more from the payment than their career because they never make it to the MLB. Long term EV is in favor of the financier, but the individual would rather operate within a range of $2m to $300m than $0 to $340m

No one put a gun to Fernando Tatis Jr.'s head. He voluntarily chose to take $2 million and understood the risk of having to pay back a lot more. It wasn't a loan. If he didn't make it to MLB, then he owed nothing. Easy to blame people in his circle, but it was his choice.
